Hi all. Having perrused the ep forum I noticed that most interest is for fast scopes and high end eps. I don't know why I haven't asked this here before but I will now. I am building my EP set for my 200R and would like to know what ya'll have. I really don't want to spend tons of dough on top of the line eps if I can get near the same performance from mid line ones. I've been looking at Vixen Lanthunum wides, Baader Hyperions, Orion Stratus and Meade SWs. My main viewing is DSOs and what I already own is:
Nagler T6 9mm Meade 5K 14mm Plossl WO 16mmUWAN Meade 5K 26mm Plossl WO 28mm UWAN Meade 5K 40mm Plossl
I am interested in filling the gap between the 16 & 28mm UWANs and between the 28 UWAN and 40mm Meade with eps in the 68 AFOV range although I will always concider UWs at the right price. EPs don't have to be new although with the manufacturers I have listed above I would buy new, but if an upper range ep hit the used market I would buy it. I have read folks writting about performance vs. cost and with an f10 scope I would rather purchase a $200 ep that performs 80-90% of that of a $400 ep. Is there a chart which shows any of this? I have seen used pans in the 20-22mm range for less than $200 but that is still near twice the cost of the Orion.
So let's hear from everyone. I want to know whatcha think.
Clear skies for December!

I have very few EP's now. I bought a binoviewer and Denk Power X Switch diagonal. This has a built in barlow and reducer. Basically with a push of a switch and some refocusing I have three different mags for one set of EP's, (and without the hassle of pulling them out, dropping them etc).
So if you have one good quality EP it acts as three. Outside of some EP's for alignment etc, I just have Denk 14's and 21's. I think it makes a lot of sense to invest in the switch diagonal because you get more mileable out of your EPs so you need less of them. That translates to being able to get fewer, better EPs.
That's my thought anyway

Baader Hyperions 3.5mm, 5mm, 8mm (20mm eye relief!)
Televue Powermates 1.25": 2.5x and 5x (for use with SLR camera)
7mm Antares Orthoscopic
Scopetronix 14mm, 18mm and 40mm wideangle digiscoping eyepieces
Celestron Plossl 4mm, 6mm, 9mm, 15mm, 32mm
Celestron NexStar Plossl 26mm, E-Lux 26mm
Meade Series 4000 Super Plossl 26mm
Celestron 2x barlow
GSO SuperView 1.25": 10mm, 15mm, 20mm, 2":30mm, 50mm
6 assorted Kellners and Reverse Kellners.
That's too many but I have a plan. I'm planning to offer the Celestron Plossl set, the 1.25" GSOs and the NexStar Plossl for sale after Xmas. Any money I make will go toward expanding the Hyperion set. When I complete the Hyperion set I'll sell the 14mm and 18mm Scopetronix digiscoping eyepieces and pick up 32mm and 40mm 1.25" Plossls for use with my scopes that have only 1.25" focusers, then I'll sell the 40mm Scopetronix.

About 75% of my viewing is through the 13mm T6 Nagler. I gladly paid list price knowing I could always sell it for nearly that if it let me down. It hasn't.

The Nagler 22 would go perfectly in between the 16 and 28. You might find one for about 300 used. It is my main EP.

Buy a used 22Pan for $200. Much better than 80-90% of a $400 ep for $200, it's 100% of a $300 ep for $200!

I have Meade EPs
32mm 2" UWA - I use this far more often than the rest. 26mm 1 1/4" - came with scope. Never used. 14mm 2" UWA use for planets and some DSOs if conditions are good. 8.8mm 2" UWA used very little- mostly planets 6.6mm 2" UWA used very little...

Hey JD. I think you used what was called "new math" back in the 60s. I get it and I think the answer is 4!
Thanks to all of you who have responded so far and to those of you who still will.
I think my CSC needs new batteries!

I've never tried a Panoptic, but it is probably more value for the money than the Nagler. The jump from Panoptics 68 degrees apparent field of view [afov] (and by extension, true field of view) to 82 with the Nagler is noticeable. I don't have a panoptic but I do have a decent Meade SWA 40 mm 68°AFOV to compare to

Well, after finding out about the Vixen North America sale, I just purchased 13, 22 and 42mm Lanthanum LVW eyepieces. This is really exciting and I can't wait for first light. I am going to do a shootout between the 42mm LVW and the Meade Series 5K 40mm Plossl. I really like the 40mm but am interested in the wider afov of the LVW. We'll see. Thanks to ya'll who responded.

I like my 17 & 22mm LVWs--I'm interested in hearing your experiences with the 42 when it arrives.

I'll let you know as soon as I can run them through their paces. If the weather holds, fellow CNer Jim Barnett and I are going to set up this Friday night and with his 30 years of knowledge, I should be able to give ya a pretty good report.
