NIGHT SKY Magazine going away??
      #1294532 - 12/10/06 02:30 AM

I picked up something about a bit of a shakeup among the ranks of those producing Sky and Telescope, and that NIGHT SKY magazine is about to end publication. With O'Meara leaving, I am wondering if there is any truth to the rumors?

Oh I hope not, I really like Night Sky for its simplicity. I still consider myself an astro-newbie and I like having a choice of magazine that doesn't have all the scientific stuff in it and just gets into the observing aspect of things (but a bit more formally than Amateur Astronomy, which I also like). It would be a real disservice for beginners to end this magazine already, I think.

I sure hope that it doesn't go away, I read NIght Sky and S&T every month. I think it gives some good general information to the people who may be intimidated by some of the content of S&T and Astronomy magazine.

I was afraid this was going to happen. I read an article that stated that the internet is putting "special interest" publications at risk. Sky and Telescope was used as an example. Night Sky reminds me a lot of Odyssey, a great beginners mag that i used to bring to grade school with me. These were the days that i longed for an Odyssey, Astroscan, or ultimately Questar. I hope it stays in publication.

David,

Where specifically did you hear that? Things like that shouldn't be talked about without attribution.

You're quite right. And since from his post it sounds like David (the other David, I mean) is himself trying to get to the bottom of a rumor, I've sent a note to Sky Publishing to see if they could clear up these matters for us. Not sure that they will bother to answer, but it seemed worth a try.

I will, of course, report back whatever they tell me. In the meantime, let's not get too carried away speculating on what this all might mean.

I have an article in the Jan/Feb. 2007 issue. You guys are scaring me. Please get your ducks in a row before saying stuff like Night Sky is going under.

Thanks for looking into this Tom W., I certainly hope it's just a rumor. I look forward to NightSky much more that S&T & Astronomy!

Maybe someone behind the curtain here at CN could shed some light. They help pay the bills at NIGHTSKY and likely have regular contact. Just a thought...

It was posted on sci.astro.amateur yesterday (and is getting more activity today, with no out and out denials). Although I am not a fan of that newsgroup (and some of the stuff is wildly inaccurate), with O'Meara's moving to ASTRONOMY, it did make me think that maybe there might be something to the s.a.a posting. I see nothing to indicate that it may be true (and there was also a claim that some of the management staff had been let go), but again, I have seen nothing concrete about it, so I had to ask. Clear skies to you.

Two issues in to a subscription, I think Night Sky is a great astronomy read for the whole family, with a good emphasis on what to observe. I hope the rumours are unfounded.

Best, Jay

Well, I doubt that *CN* helps pay any bills anywhere. Astronomics might be considered to do so, by buying ads in the mag, but I don't know whether or not they do any more than that or whether they have any "inside" knowledge.

While I again hope that it's not true, if it is, I imagine S&T will announce something soon enough...until then, it's all conjecture.

Steph, I think the comment that Mike makes is directly referring to Astronomics (our owner) and the fact that they ADVERTISE in Night Sky. Anyway, I HOPE this isn't true.

A slow day at work and my curiosity led me to an 800 number for Sky Publishing..... the March/April issue will be the last one.

Ugh, my nephew just subscribed to it, I think he has only gotten one issue so far. I wonder how they will compensate for unfullfilled subscriptions? With a subscription to S&T?

It's a shame. I looked at one and was reasonably impressed. Just because something is slanted towards beginners does not mean it has no value to the experienced, if you ask me.

This reminds me of the time when I was a teen and got burnt when I subscribed to a new astronomy magazine. It was very disappointing.

Nightsky had good intentions to offer a beginners magazine however, I always felt it was too basic of a publication, and never like the fact it was only published every other month.
