Well, now that Night Sky will unfortunately be no more, complete 2004-2007 sets will be a collector's item. (Quote)

I'm fortunate to have the complete set, starting with the Premier Issue right up to the last one in perfect condition; & I'm keeping them!

Rick,

Welcome to Cloudy Nights and I'd just like to add to the sorrow at the end of Night Sky and appreciation for your postings on the subject here.

I've subscribed to it for about the last year or so and enjoyed it tremendously. I think it's a terrific compliment to S&T, to which I also subscribe.

It may seem silly, but one of the sections I enjoyed the most was near the back. It was how to pronounce many of the astronomical terms we use.

I am sorry to hear about this. I have really enjoyed this magazine.

The "funny" thing is that just today (12/19/06), I got my renewal notice for Night Sky, warning that I only have one issue left and that "to ensure future delivery of your Night Sky magazine," I should "send in this renewal today!"

Tad, those are likely auto-processed by some company that the job had been outsourced to before the news was announced. Good to know, though, they may have forgotten to turn off that switch, so to speak, and hopefully someone will be aware of it soon!

I am very disappointed by the fact that I won't have Night Sky to read anymore. I was a long time subscriber of one of the popular astronomy magazines, but dropped it because I realized I was just passing by all the technical articles because they didnt' interest me or were way over my head. Night Sky gave me just the information I needed. And I have a hard time keeping up with monthly magazines so the bi monthly edition worked out perfect.

The renewal notice I received warns "Don't risk missing any of your issues: return your instant renewal today," and then states "2 Issues To Go." Sort of prescient, in an ironic way.

Reading this latest issue reminded me how much I like this magazine. Very sorry to see it go.

This is just my gut sense of things, but with more of us living in light polluted areas, with kids having access to Xbox, Wii, Playstation, Tivo and on and on (and spending less time outside), there will be fewer new readers for S&T and mags like Night Sky. I hope S&T and Astronomy can hang in there and not have to merge or fold or dumb themselves down.

I was afraid this was going to happen. I read an article that stated that the internet is putting "special interest" publications at risk. Sky and Telescope was used as an example. Night Sky reminds me a lot of Odyssey, a great beginners mag that i used to bring to grade school with me. These were the days that i longed for an Odyssey, Astroscan, or ultimately Questar. I hope it stays in publication.

IMO S&T died years ago when they became a glitsy rag for armchair astonomers. I let my subscription lapse last year and don't miss it at all. Publishing "Night Sky" shows how out of touch they are with the target market. The health of any technical/hobbyist magazine can be judged by the quantity and quality of ad placements by small companies.

Perhaps if S&T and Astronomy merge their operations the combined company can make a go of it for a few more years.

How many years ago was that? Which articles for non-armchair astronomers have they dropped? And what has been added for armchair astronomers?

Does that mean that S&T should become more like Astronomy? I think that even Astronomy's own editors would agree that their magazine is *more* glitsy than S&T. What are you suggesting S&T do to get more in touch with the market?

I find this statement truly puzzling in view of all that has been said in this thread to this point. The outpouring of regrets and disappointment and outright grief over the ending of NightSky would, to my mind, indicate that the exact opposite was the case.

The health of any technical/hobbyist magazine can be judged by the quantity and quality of ad placements by small companies. (Quote)

How many small companies can afford the quantity & quality ads that the major companies place? When I have done a search for an unusual item, very seldom does a small company show up, I'm wondering how many actually exist. I've subscribed a good part of my life to Hobbyist magazines, & no matter what hobby, small companies didn't participate much, but the magazines still flourished.

As Tom mentioned, not only this thread, but a couple of others here on CN, readers are all very disappointed with the demise of Night Sky Magazine.

I subscribe to Astronomy & S&T, (and Night Sky), and there was major differences in all three; each has their own qualities to satisfy almost anyone.

What IS an "armchair astronomer"? As amateurs, don't we all fall under that category? Or has my understanding of the term "Armchair -blank-" been incorrect the entire time?

Edit: After some thought I may have puzzled it out. Is it referring to someone who (in this case) reads about astronomy, but doesn't actively participate in the hobby, perhaps? If that is correct, I can't really say that I see anything wrong with that.

Considering the weather of late, most of us are armchair astronomers these days.

That's my understanding of the term too. You're right, there's not a thing in the world wrong with that. Lots is right with it, in fact. Better to have armchair astronomers than none at all.
