I picked up something about a bit of a shakeup among the ranks of those producing Sky and Telescope, and that NIGHT SKY magazine is about to end publication. With O'Meara leaving, I am wondering if there is any truth to the rumors?

Oh I hope not, I really like Night Sky for its simplicity. I still consider myself an astro-newbie and I like having a choice of magazine that doesn't have all the scientific stuff in it and just gets into the observing aspect of things (but a bit more formally than Amateur Astronomy, which I also like). It would be a real disservice for beginners to end this magazine already, I think.

I sure hope that it doesn't go away, I read NIght Sky and S&T every month. I think it gives some good general information to the people who may be intimidated by some of the content of S&T and Astronomy magazine.

I was afraid this was going to happen. I read an article that stated that the internet is putting "special interest" publications at risk. Sky and Telescope was used as an example. Night Sky reminds me a lot of Odyssey, a great beginners mag that i used to bring to grade school with me. These were the days that i longed for an Odyssey, Astroscan, or ultimately Questar. I hope it stays in publication.

Where specifically did you hear that? Things like that shouldn't be talked about without attribution.

You're quite right. And since from his post it sounds like David (the other David, I mean) is himself trying to get to the bottom of a rumor, I've sent a note to Sky Publishing to see if they could clear up these matters for us. Not sure that they will bother to answer, but it seemed worth a try.
I will, of course, report back whatever they tell me. In the meantime, let's not get too carried away speculating on what this all might mean.

Maybe someone behind the curtain here at CN could shed some light. They help pay the bills at NIGHTSKY and likely have regular contact. Just a thought...

It was posted on sci.astro.amateur yesterday (and is getting more activity today, with no out and out denials). Although I am not a fan of that newsgroup (and some of the stuff is wildly inaccurate), with O'Meara's moving to ASTRONOMY, it did make me think that maybe there might be something to the s.a.a posting. I see nothing to indicate that it may be true (and there was also a claim that some of the management staff had been let go), but again, I have seen nothing concrete about it, so I had to ask. Clear skies to you.

Two issues in to a subscription, I think Night Sky is a great astronomy read for the whole family, with a good emphasis on what to observe. I hope the rumours are unfounded.

Well, I doubt that *CN* helps pay any bills anywhere. Astronomics might be considered to do so, by buying ads in the mag, but I don't know whether or not they do any more than that or whether they have any "inside" knowledge.
While I again hope that it's not true, if it is, I imagine S&T will announce something soon enough...until then, it's all conjecture.

Steph, I think the comment that Mike makes is directly referring to Astronomics (our owner) and the fact that they ADVERTISE in Night Sky. Anyway, I HOPE this isn't true.

Ugh, my nephew just subscribed to it, I think he has only gotten one issue so far. I wonder how they will compensate for unfullfilled subscriptions? With a subscription to S&T?
It's a shame. I looked at one and was reasonably impressed. Just because something is slanted towards beginners does not mean it has no value to the experienced, if you ask me.
This reminds me of the time when I was a teen and got burnt when I subscribed to a new astronomy magazine. It was very disappointing.

Nightsky had good intentions to offer a beginners magazine however, I always felt it was too basic of a publication, and never like the fact it was only published every other month.

Hi everyone, I decided to check the S&T website to see if one could still subscribe to Night Sky and lo and behold on the opening screen is their pronouncement that they will cease publication after the March/April issue. Too bad, it was a nice resource for visual observers.

Hello, everyone. This is Rick Fienberg, editor in chief of Sky & Telescope magazine. There's a lot of speculation on this forum about goings-on at Sky Publishing, so I thought I'd better jump in and set the record straight. My colleague J. Kelly Beatty and I just posted the following announcement on our website, SkyTonight.com: "Sky Publishing has decided to stop producing Night Sky, its bimonthly magazine for beginning amateur astronomers. The next issue, appearing in February and dated March/April 2007, will be the last. We are no longer accepting new orders for Night Sky. More information about the disposition of existing subscriptions will be available shortly. "We launched Night Sky in May/June 2004 to serve entry-level stargazers who want to enjoy and explore the heavens but who find Sky & Telescope too advanced for their needs. Apparently, there aren't as many of these folks as we thought — at least, not enough of them prepared to buy a magazine like Night Sky. "Sky Publishing was acquired by New Track Media in February 2006. NTM chief executive officer Stephen J. Kent explains, 'We decided to wind down Night Sky because it never gained traction in the marketplace. Despite three years of aggressive subscription and newsstand marketing, the magazine showed no sign of becoming profitable. I'm as disappointed as anybody, because it's a terrific product.' Kent adds, 'We'll enhance and improve the editorial mix in Sky & Telescope and on our website to make sure we continue to serve amateur astronomers of all levels.' "Launching a new magazine is always a gamble. According to Samir A. Husni, chair of the journalism department at the University of Mississippi and a leading analyst of the magazine industry, 60% of new magazines fail in their first year, 80% fail by their fourth year, and 90% are gone within 10 years. Sky & Telescope, founded in November 1941, is now in its 66th year of continuous publication." Ordinarily, we'd leave it at that. But I'd also like to make a few additional comments to address the rumors and innuendo circulating here and in other online forums. Yes, we laid off five people last week. That's what happens when you close down an unprofitable part of your business. It was very painful, but sadly necessary. Four of the layoffs were associated with the closure of Night Sky, and one with cutbacks in our book-publishing business, which has also been struggling lately. The affected employees are sharing the news with friends and associates as they see fit; I don't think it would be appropriate for me to list their names here. No, president/publisher Susan B. Lit was not dismissed; she decided to leave on her own. Over the past six years she led the conversion of Sky Publishing from a mom-and-pop operation to an enterprise worthy of becoming the foundation of New Track Media, but with that accomplished, she was no longer in charge. Not surprisingly for someone who had risen to the level of CEO, she decided to look elsewhere for new opportunities to apply her considerable knowledge and skills. Yes, Stephen James O'Meara will now be writing regularly for Astronomy rather than Sky & Telescope. I'd tell you why he made this change if I knew, but I don't. One day he told us he didn't want to write his column for us anymore, and the next day we heard that he will be writing for the competition. I don't know what prompted this, and Steve won't tell me. All speculation voiced online to date is just that: speculation. As far as Sky & Telescope is concerned, the only "writing on the wall" says that New Track Media is firmly committed to maintaining its flagship publication's leadership in the astronomy-magazine marketplace. Yes, we'll be doing some things differently, but all in the interest of operating more efficiently (to keep costs down and avoid having to raise the price you pay) and providing a better experience for our readers/customers. Thanks for the opportunity to clarify a few things. Feel free to post your comments here (I'll be back to read them over the next few days), and/or you can send e-mail to me directly at rfienberg@SkyandTelescope.com.

Rick, thanks for coming to Cloudy Nights and posting this straight-from-the-folks-who-know response. We appreciate your willingness to go on record here and add a few comments outside of what's in the official announcement.
As I noted in this thread, I very much have enjoyed Night Sky and am sorry to see that the news is true. But, sadly, I understand that the realities of profitability, etc. have to be considered as well. I hope that S&T will be able to incorporate some of the "simpleness" of Night Sky for those who appreciate the non-technical and non-scientific aspects of our hobby.
Feel free to stick around and join us in discussions any time, not just on this issue!

PS: anyone else find is more than mildly humorous that the Editor-in-Chief of S&T is listed as a "newbie"???? If he's a newbie most of the rest of us are in big trouble.

I am so disappointed to hear that Night Sky will be no more. It is my favorite magazine, I have subscribed since 2004. I had hoped that it would start coming out monthly, and I was just about to renew my subscription. I am shocked to hear that it was not wildly popular, as it was the one mag I really looked forward to getting. I learned so much from it...I am not ready for it to be gone

Dear Rick
This is such a bitter sweet day for me. Bitter because Night Sky is going out of print. Sweet because I just received my Jan/Feb issue and saw my name in print.
I want you to know that writing for Night Sky has been one of the greatest achievements of my life and for that I will always be grateful.

Rick,
Many thanks for joining this discussion and setting the record straight. As I explained when I contacted Sky Publishing, Cloudy Nights works very hard to make sure the information found here is accurate and as free from baseless speculation as is possible (no easy task on a forum this large and this busy!) Your post has made that task, in this particular case, much easier.
Like everyone in the amateur astronomy community I am very disappointed that Night Sky did not survive. I understand enough about publishing to know that, for it to survive as long as it did without actually making a profit, a major effort was made to make it work. Having endured the failure of a business venture myself, I have no difficulty understanding how painful this must be for all involved.
Night Sky was a great idea and an excellent magazine. It will be missed.
Thank you again for joining us and sharing this explanation.
Oh, and about that "newbie" status. A couple of dozen posts (in the fora of your choice) should do the trick...
