Buying A New LX200 new
      #88795 - 04/11/04 10:08 AM

Hi there.

I am buying a 10" LX200GPS package, which includes the following:

*Meade 10 inch LX200GPS Schmidt - Cassegrain Telescope
*BC&F Standard Heater Controller
*BC&F Astro Engineering Dew Heater Bands
*BC&F Astro Engineering Alignmate - Eyepiece Level and Compass
*BC&F Astro Engineering Flexi Dew Shields
*Heavy Duty 13.8v 6amp Regulated AC Mains Power Supply Unit
*Meade Series 4000 Super Plossls - 26mm, 12.4mm & 6.4mm.
*Meade Series 4000 Super Wide Angle - 18mm
*Meade Autostar Suite and LPI

I am getting all this for £3,300 (about $6,000) which is as cheap as it gets in England.

Can anyone think of anything else that should be included? I will probably need a wedge eventually, but I'll save that for a christmas present.

Thanks!!

Liam.

Hi Liam, and Happy Easter. I use to have a 12" LX200GPS. Looks like you have a nice setup and my only recommendation would be the Meade 4000 6.4mm. I did not like mine. I personnaly would recommend getting a TAK 5 or 7mm over the Meade. The rest are good EPs though, I just never liked my 6.4 EP.

Is your system a UHTC? That would be my only other recommendation, or at a minimum the UHTC 2inch diaganol. I loved my diaganol.

Charles

Liam,
Congrats on the new scope. You are going to love it! I tend to agree about the 6.4mm EP. You will rarely get to use that much power. You are going to love the 18mm! It's my favorite. The only thing I would add right away would be a Telrad. I hope you will write a vewing report for first light.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Yes, it is UHTC, so that's okay.

As for the 6.4mm, I'll see if I can either swap it for a different eyepiece as the place sells loads of different makes, or get £89 knocked off the price.

I'll let you all know how it goes when it arrives, but seeing as how I live in the North of England, it'll probably be cloudy and wet till about August!!!

Oh, and Gordon, I've paid a £300 deposit, and don't have to pay the other £3000 for 9 months. I plan on fleeing the country before then though!!!

As for the TELRAD, do you mean one like this?

CLICK FOR TELRAD

And also, I can't find any TAK eyepieces, but are there any you could recommend out of this lot?

Thanks again, and if the links don't work, don't blame me!

Liam,
That is the Telrad. I love mine. I never used the stock finder after the Telrad purchase. In fact, it is on your side of the pond now! Televue makes great eyepeices. I'd suggest playing with the scope for a while before deciding which to buy. Your choices may vary depending on what you like to view. The good news is that an SCT at f/10 doesn't necessarily require the highest end eyepieces. The fast scope owners are the ones who have to fork over the $$$ for Panoptics and Radians while we can use Konigs.

Right, that's the Telrad added, and the 6.4mm eyepiece taken off, making the whole package £43 cheaper!

That's what I like to hear!

A 6.3 focal reducer might be handy, the lowest power youve got with your package is 96x with the 26mm plus a illumanated reticle makes the aligniment process so much easier.

I second that!

You will need a focal reducer/field flattener.

I have an 8" SCT F/10 and without the focal reducer, even the panoptic 35mm is just too much sometimes.

Also, are you sure you need all the electronics.

I've had both and I prefer no computer. Once you learn how to use a Telrad and/or the setting circles on an EQ mount, you sorta wonder why people pay so much for the computer.

As I said though, I have both. Sometimes, having the computer take me on a Messier Tour is just the thing for a lazy night of viewing.

No probs. I can add a focal reducer.

I also have a 4.5" Celestron 114GT which I was going to sell. Would the Meade eyepieces work in the Celestron, as they are both 1.25"? If they do, I could keep the Celestron and use it when I can't be bothered setting up the Meade!

A focal reducer would make using the LPI much more pleasant. If you get a wedge get an illuminated reticule at the same time. You don't really need it in AltAz, but it is a must have with EQ for drift alignment etc.

My 6mm EP is pretty much a paper weight the 9mm can be used often however, but the 12mm can almost always be used.

Looks like a great setup!

If you can't find the tak I would recommend the Tel Vue 8mm and a powermate 2x. That way on really great nights you can bring that 8mm down to a 4 which I had done many times when shooting Mars. The 8mm Radian is a nice EP and I love mine. The PowerMates are the best in my opinion. I have both 2" powermates, the 2x and the 4X and use them often for imaging.

Boy oh boy, isn't it fun helping someone buy some kit! Vicarious retail therapy.
I also rigged up a (racing and therefore sealed gel) 12V motorbike battery as a power supply so that I am not dependent on an extension cord. It works really well.
