I think Gimp is free, and it is very powerful. I don't know how to use though, so I can't really help you there.

I don't do much 2D stuff, but there are a few 3D programs floating around. I believe Terragen is still free. It is a 3D landscape generator. NASA artists use it a lot. If you want to do 3D renders, Art of Illusion is free, but has a pretty steep learning curve. Wings 3D is another good free 3d Modelling program. All of these can be used to generate pretty detailed art.

Terragen still has a free version, and it is quite easy to use and good at creating 3D terrain.

The problem with Terragen is that it can be difficult to adapt digital elevation map data to its system (you have to jump through a lot of hoops). I still use the old DEMs from Vistapro, and would like to use them with Terragen, but it doesn't seem possible. Clear skies to you.

Yes i agree, Terragen is fantastic for a base image to work on but you can't really get a finished product just using it alone imho..

Very true. Terragen is the starting point. Post-processing is done in Photoshop or a similar tool, and that is also where you add in stars, planets, etc. which Terragen cannot really do.
I know that there's a plug-in out there that lets you add textures to Terragen maps, and there may be ones that make adapting digital terrain maps easier, but I am not familiar with them.
Version 2.0 of Terragen will be very nice... if it ever is released!

PhotoFiltre programm is free. Small and powerfull, but without layers support. Paint.Net is free to. Layers support, very friendly interface, fast and with groving functionality... For 3D-imaging the Blender rendering program is the winner.

Yup... Gimp is free. Works and looks just like Photoshop... I think even the keyboard shortcuts are the same as they are in Photoshop.

2Mike Loffland: Tried to work with TheGimp several times. A very unstable program. After loosing some real work, decided to forget about this editor.

Not sure whats happening with the Gimp but it works 100% fine on my desktop computer but when i try it on my older Laptop it really does mess up big time. My guess is that the issue is to do with the Specs of computers?
Great programme though and one i have used many times personally..

2orionthehunters: may be, it is problem with stable work on my localised version of Windows (Russian/Cyrillic). May be, it works fine on the single native language PC.

I just started exploring Blender last night. I haven't done anything except look through the tutorials and submitted galleries, and it's VERY impressive!

Senpai,
I tried the Program on a few machines running different versions of Windows from 95 to XP Pro. The gimp worked on all but Win95 which i sort of expected really if there was any problems i found that it was down to RAM and not enough of it on older Machines and it seems that anything above 128 meg will work but below no chance..
Most computers have more Memory than 64meg of course but it's the old laptops that are effected i have found at least..
