I have a 127 Orion Apex set up for astronomical use and I have a problem with star collimation. The scope was jarred and knocked it out of collimation. No other damage. With a star test using the 90 degree prism finder, the diffraction rings are squeezed toward the 11 o'clock position. I am familiar with collimating a Newtonion, but don't know which way to go with the Mak. I am aware that the prism turns the image right side up and it is reversed left to right. Any instructions to get me started? Thanks.
Doug.

Hello Doug, I am not familar with your Mak, but I can tell you how I collimate my MK67 primary. With the star diagonal in place, center the star in eye piece at about x150 magnification( or less to start with) and move inside focus. If the rings are bunched to one side, adjust the mirror slowly while looking to see the defocused image moving to the edge of the eyepiece. You need to move the defocused image to the side of eyepiece where the rings are bunched together and away from the side where the rings are spread out. Then re-center the star image and continue the process, making small adjustments each time until you have concentric rings. It helps if you number the adjustment screws, so you can keep track of what you are doing. Hope this makes sense.

Go to the Orion web site and download the instruction sheet titled: Collimating Orion StarMax and Apex Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescopes.

Thanks, Bill and Phil. Got it collimated and thr star test looks great. Very nice diffration rings. I did it outside with a Christmas ornament about 100 yards away.

Good to hear you fixed it. Maks aren't very easy to collimate, but the Apex is easier than a lot of others.

It's imporant to remember, your test star must be in the CENTRE of your eyepiece otherwise you will get something that looks like bad collimation.
With Maks you can also look down the front of the tube and lign up the shadow of the secondary, but I might try that from the back method next time it might be easier.
