More power
      #1312 - 05/04/03 08:19 PM

Ok, a power question now. I know lots about molecular micorbiolgoy...I now nothing about voltage amps yada yada. I'm trying to figure out what to use for portable field power and am utterly confused. I have looked at several power source plans (MAPUG) that all have 3 12V outlets for laptops, dew eradication, TVs etc, and then they have one 18V outlet for the LX200. However, reading through the specs of a new LX200, it say that it runs from 12Vs. Do I still need the Meade 18V convertor? Did older LX200's run off of 12V? I see that the 16" indeed runs off of 18V.
I'm sure its a dumb question but any insight would be great.

Hi, Chad.

The original LX200 models instroduced in 1992 operated from 12 volts but were seen to have problems attaining sufficient motor torque. The design was quickly changed to operate from 18 volts and this remained the case throughout the production of this model. The LX200GPS, which was introduced in 2002, is a different instrument and was succesfully designed to operate from 12 volts. You will not need an 18 volt power source.

You're welcome, Chad.

By the way, I was at my local Harbor Freight tool store yesterday and found a bargain for portable astro power. They have a 12V, 17 amp-hour battery pack with a real voltmeter, built-in charger (no wall-wart required), auto shutoff on the charger so you don't need to remember to disconnect it, plus a cheap, noisy air compressor (which I will probably remove to save weight) - all for $50! Plus it comes with an exploded parts diagram with part numbers and Harbor Freight is very good about making replacement parts available if anything goes wrong. My other portable packs came from Walmart or K-mart auto departments but this one has some real advantages.

Hi, Chad.

Oops. I was at Harbor Freight again today and now they have the same power pack except no compressor so it's a little smaller and lighter for $40!

The CGE does make a nice dining room decoration; it's hard to tell when I'll get to look through it, though.

I bet that Newt gives good views; in my experience the Chinese reflectors are much better than they should be for the money. It's just easier to make a decent cheap reflector than a refractor.
