Howdy all;
Santa brought me a credit card for Circuit City. I am considering an electronic sketchpad and I wonder if there is enough difference between the various brands to make one a better choice than the others. I think that Wacom is the leader in this area, but I don't know why they would be on top, if they are.
Some input will help me decide. I plan to make my pencil and charcoal drawings into an electronic media. I assume that they all plug into a USB port and then I can make a BMP or JPEG file from the finished art on the screen.
Thanks for whatever you can tell me; Steve Coe

I don't use one myself but you can't go wrong with Wacom (see this list of the 'Top 10 Pressure-Sensitive Graphics Tablets'), they are pretty much an industry standard and i've seen many fine works created with them.
Also, i think good graphics software will help bring out all the features of the tablet.

Hi Steve,
I've used a couple different Wacom Intuos tablets (a 6" x 8" and 9" x 12"), but that's it, so I can't compare them to other products. I can just say that they are a real pleasure to use and offer wonderful, tactile control. There can be some frustration when you are doing sweeping strokes and trying to relate the sweep of your wrist or elbow with what's happening on the screen. Normally when working with paper, you know how you'll change the angle of your arm, or the angle of the paper to accommodate--it's not always as intuitive with the tablet. But it still beats using a mouse for fluid, delicate drawing when the need arises.
The tablets do use USB, and it looks like they even have a 6" x 8" bluetooth wireless model too. What software are you planning to use with it? Were you going to lay your original sketches on the tablet and use them like a template to plot the field stars and such? It sounds like a lot of fun. I'm interested to hear how it goes for you and to see the results!

Hi Jimmy;
I have a version of Paint Shop Pro and the Wacom pads do come with a version of Photoshop Elements. I will have to try out some these and see what works.
I have two possibilities when it comes to how to do this. First is just try to electronically reproduce my pencil drawings from over the years. Second is a more complex method: create the star field with Sky Map Pro and without the deep sky object, then save that as a GIF and call it into the drawing software, then add the nebula or galaxy in the proper place and at the correct angle compared to my original drawing at the eyepiece.
I am willing to try both and see what happens before I make a decision. I have tried scanning the hand made drawings and it just does not come out good. The pencil strokes are too obvious and trying to erase for effect yields poor results also.
So, I am willing to give it a try; Steve Coe

Steve,
Thanks a lot for the sweet words. I am looking forward to see your work on it. If you don't mind i want to ask you about your book. I made a search in Amazon.com and didn't find it. Is there a link for it so i can take a look at it. Thank you.

Ahmed;
I went to amazon and entered "Nebulae" in the search window and it came right up. I hope you decide to get a copy. Thank you for asking.
