How do you feel of your pier? I am looking forward to get one instead of a tripod. Which of them is more portable? Do you feel that your setup is stable enough on a sandy surface?

That surface is actually a bit deceiving. Its sand but only the top inch or so, after that its very hard packed dirt. The jack screws dug down a little during setup, but eventually stopped. I've cut some 2x6's to use as floating bases since alot of my scope use is out in very deep sand.

Its night and day stability-wise compared to the meade tripod I was using. Vibrations stopped in under 2 seconds BEFORE I added foam to the leg assembly. Haven't checked it since. Portability-wise, its definately not as easy as slinging my tripod over a shoulder. It breaks down into several pieces but the main pier portion is a good 100lbs alone. I've got another thread going in the mounts forum discussing the materials used to make that portable pier.

Here's the Classic with ST80 in the Heritage Park Observatory. For the 3D view, cross your eyes so the you're looking at the left image with your right eye & vice versa.

Ok, well here's my little observatory all set up (not for imaging, for visual, it gets a little crazy when I'm set up for imaging) and yes, I do use a Celestron dew shield with my Meade telescope.
