Mine are stamped "fully coated"
Well, this might be a bit unusual.
Are these really the same models? Are these both 30x80s, or is E.B.'s pair a 20x80? It's not unusual to have a manufacturer take liberties with specs and claims, but it would be unusual for it to vary on the stamping of an individual model. Gentlemen, could you both check to see if we're talking about the same stamped label that usually appears on the back end of the barrel next to the eyepiece? Stephen perhaps yours is from a later production run?
Thanks -

E.B.-
Few binoculars are completely unaffected by false color on Luna and the brighter celestial targets.
And yes, it's possible to see up to 4 of Jupiter's moons at once (one or more are frequently passing in front of or behind the planet).
The rings of Saturn and a few of its moons are also easy targets at 30x.
Glad you're enjoying the views.
Hi Art-
I addressed this in an earlier post, and also believe there were separate production runs:
"An email response from Barska re these discrepancies also admits an imprinting error on [some of] the instruments by the manufacturer."

Stephen, thanks for pointing that out - it helps, but doen't completely clear it up. I guess I'm still a bit puzzled because my limted experience with the 20x80 X-Trails seemed to show coated a objective but not a multi-coated one - they were blue rather than that deep greenish purple that I see in multi-coated objective. Yet your description sounds like MC at least for the objective lens. Maybe the 30's have MC (albeit not FMC) while the 20's did not.
Thanks -

Art-
Mardi's report on the XT20x closely concurs with my coatings evaluation of the 30x:
"These binoculars are multicoated on the eyelens and objective lens *only*. The visible prism reflections appear single MgF2 coated judging from their blue-toned reflection. The multicoating that is present seems equivalent in degree of it's reflectivity to any other multicoated optic i have."
The plot thickens...

I sometimes wonder if Fully Coated means the objective is fully coated from edge to edge.

Yes you can... in fact, you can see them with 10x50's.

Hello Stephen,
Awhile back I had some questions for you, about your Barska 30x80 X-Trail, based upon your mini-review. I finally took the leap & received a 30x80 for my birthday, this November, as a gift from my wife. So, I thought I would give you a quick rundown on the one that came to me from SWFA.com at $119.95 + $12 UPS Ground.
Lets look at the minus side first: Mine only has Fully Coated Optics, close focus is around 100'+, the braced-in tripod mounting post did not have any rubber washer on the bottom where it screws into the tripod head (I picked one up at a local hardware store for under a dollar), the braced-in tripod mounting post is too short for one of my tripod heads (had to purchase a Garrett Optical Binocular Center Post 1" Extension for $25), the right side appears to be slightly out of collimation, I can only use it with the eyecups folded down, with the eyecups in the up position I get serious tunnel vision, the neck strap is like a shoe-string. For some, the lack of waterproof/fogproof should probably be mentioned, even though it would be unrealistic at this price.
Now for the plus side: A 30x80 giant binocular for a mere $131, looking at a full moon/absolutely no visible ghosting, color fringing around the full moon was insignificant, craters at 30x are nicely defined, stars focus very well with the exception of very large bright stars showing up as double, my favorite nighttime view is the Orion Trapezium, the Pleiades completely & very brightly fill up almost the entire viewing area, stars show up where there are NO visible stars to the naked eye, handholding these whether standing/sitting/or if you prefer to lie down on your back is "no problem" (no kidding), at 4.3 lbs. they really do feel LightWeight & balance nicely in my hands, indoors the front objective lenses have a greenish coating & the rear eyepiece lenses have a pale bluish coating, daytime long distance bird watching everything appears bright & clear & sharp, fit & finish & workmanship appears excellent, front objective lens caps stay on, nice carrying case, focusing is a breeze (not to stiff & not too fast), hinges are nice & tight. Limited Lifetime Warranty.
Overall, for the price, the Barska 30x80 X-Trail is TONS-OF-FUN, & a BARREL-OF-LAUGHS + a REAL-KICK-IN-THE-PANTS, & you can even throw in, SMILES-FROM-EAR-TO-EAR. No exaggeration! If I was exaggerating I would have said, MORE FUN THAN A BARREL OF MONKEYS.
My next request for you is, will you PLEASE order a Barska 25x100 Cosmos & do a mini-review on it?
Thanks for starting the ball rolling, in the right direction, with your mini-review of the Barska 30x80 X-Trail binoculars.
p.s. Yes, I do own a Manfrotto tripod & Manfrotto 501 two-way pro video head & I use them w/the Barska 30x80's when I need to get serious.
Also, the Barska 2006 catalog shows the Optical Coating as being Multi-Coated. Same for the 20x80 X-Trail, however, for the 15x70 X-Trail it lists the Optical Coating as Fully Coated. I looked through the Barska 15x70 & 20x80 X-Trail's at a Big 5 Sporting Goods store & looking thru them outside, in the daytime, I thought they were great inexpensive binoculars.
I would recommend that those who are interested in knowing more about Barska binoculars, etc, that you call 888-666-6769 and ask for Sandra & tell her you'd like to receive their Sports Optics Catalog.

Hi Stan-
Wish I could bottle such unbridled enthusiasm.
Casually cruising the stars with handholdable 30s is indeed a sweet and liberating ride.
Glad I could help steer you toward a very satisfying purchase.
The 25s do look interesting. I'll keep them in mind. Thank you.
Looking forward to your future obs reports,
Stephen Saber

Likely 10mm and some recess. If otherwise satisfied, I intend to enlist its service for public viewing events.
BTW, Barska 20x80 now also available.

How did you like the 10x42s? In fact how do you rate roof prisms in general?

to tell the truth i wouldnt want another set of them even for free, rough focuser, plus i had to file the sharp corners of the strap holders so they wouldnt scrape my fingers, to me they arent comfortable to hold either , this was the second set of the blackhawks they sent, first set was worse, now i got $40 PLUS in shipping and barska fee's for an original gift of the defective seahawks i recieved, if ya buyem, make sure pick a place that has a good return policy

binosbuyer,
The Barska Blackhawk does not represent the top-of-the-line models.
Barska offers the "new" Naturescape roof prism in 8x42 WP or 10x42 WP which is Phase Coated and Fully Multi-Coated BAK-4 prisms and waterproof. There is also an 8x25 compact porro BAK-4 and FMC.
They also offer the Huntmaster in an 8x42 or 10x42 roof prism with phase-correction coated BAK-4 prisms and FMC and waterproof.

binosbuyer,
All of my binoculars are porro prism so far.
I was thinking about possibly getting my wife a roof prism for her birthday, this month. She likes the Leupold Katmai 8x32mm roof prism, and I have had my eye on the Garrett Optical 8x42mm triplet waterproof roof prism. However, the new Barska Naturescape 8x42mm is very interesting, also.
I own the Barska 30x80mm X-Trail lightweight giant binocular, as you can tell from my posting up above. As I already stated, for the money, the Barska 30x80mm is more fun than you can possibly imagine.
My major disappointment, as a bird watcher, is that the close focus does not come near to the advertised distance.
Also, I had to return a couple before Barska stepped in and sent me one directly from their headquarters in California.
I recently received a 2007 catalog and I would say that they are making an effort to improve their product line. It is not going to happen overnight, but, nonetheless they are making steps forward.
