Which Tripod? new
      #1536606 - 04/11/07 12:40 AM

I've read so many of the archives here, I'm getting the numbers running together. But all of my reading has lead me to these items. I will be putting a Bogen 501 head on either a 3246 tripod or the 475B tripod. Their specs are very similar.

I will be using the set up with a pair of Garrett 20X85 binos and as a grab and go mount with an 85mm short refractor, about 9 lbs. i also see using it with my Canon 20D and some long lenses. For the refractor, I might use a UA mount instead of the 501. I'm about 5'10".

Which tripod should I get? What are the advantages of one over the other? I wish I could see and handle both, but I havn't found a place to so so yet.

Thank you for helping me out of my decision spiral.

Hi, Jim,

You can't go wrong with either tripod; the 475 is shorter by about 15 inches but still tall enough for a 6 footer in most cases. The 20x85 is a long binocular and takes some extra height to view at higher elevations so you need to make sure it IS tall enough for you.

The 3246 will certainly be tall enough. It also has an 18" geared column rather than just 10" on the 475, which gives a bit more room to share views.

The biggest difference between the tripods is the legs. The 3246 has legs that open to a fixed angle with a fixed spreader which is fine for most usages. The 475 has independent adjustment of the legs via adjustable spreaders which I prefer for photo applications outdoors. Each leg can adjust from vertical to nearly horizontal so the 475 excells on uneven ground or for getting the odd angle. The 475 also will go very low; somewhere around 16", due to it's very adjustable leg set. I find it's design better for photography, but for binoculars/scopes I suppose it's a wash.

I like the 3036 (discontinued but easily found used) because it is 10" taller than the newer 475 but has nearly all the features including the independent leg adjustment.

Thanks Rich.

It really helps when you describe the differences the way you do. Nothing like CN for finding knowledgeable people who are willing to help.
