Tony,

I have verified your report last night. My latest addittion to my astronomical arsenal is my recently acquired dark sky property. My bino observing used to be limited to my LPed urban location and M-51 was a treat only savored in my 20" Obsession after travelling to a dark sky site. Now that i have dark sky all of the time I am pulling out the binos more frequently. I too was able to do it with my 7X50 Fujinon FMTSXs. The image scale was diminutive, but i was able to discern the pair of NGC 5194 and 5195. I amazed myself. I tried my mid-nineties 11X80s and blew up the image a bit. I have never felt these 11X80s were very bright and this was confirmed when comparing to my newest binos. My best view was with my lowly 15X70 Skymasters. I was sure i could see that 1 arc minute gap between the two (determined with my astronomy software) when i braced myself in a heavy duty camping chaise that my wife bought as a gift for me. She is always giving me just the right gift. When you crunch the hard numbers this feat is not so amazing. M-51 magnitude 8.4 and 10 arc minutes in size and NGC 5195 at 9.6 magnitude 5.3 arc minutes in size separated by a 1 arc minute gap. It should be easy in Amalia's superman Zarathustra binoculars. I would love to buy a pair of them, but jeez that 2k price would get me a pair of 16X70 Fujis and a pair of Nikon Astroluxe 18X 70s to boot.

Thank you, Woody,
thank you, Tony,
thank you, Starramus.

If seeing M 51 and its companion as two cores is really that easy,
so why hardly anybody wrote about it? And why nobody using a 10x bino?

Here we say: Take the potatoes away from your eyes before you look...

Clear skies -- without potatoes!

Sounds like something my dear old Bavarian grandmother would have said only using the term "kaduffels". Is that spelled correctly? My Deutsch is not very good at all. Me thinks my Germanic genes have been barbarianized here in America.

To be perfectly honest Amalia I never really tried to "split" the pair before in my urban light pollution. We are all constrained by the limitations of our environment.
But now my degrees of freedom are multiplied in my new locale. Oh joy! Oh joy!

Regards and clear skies,

Ahh! Finally you let us know your name, Post Extras.

....sentences deleted by Amalia...

"Kaduffel" sounds funny and our neighbouring
northern barbarians (= Germans) pronounce this "Kartoffel".

Clear skies to you, Post!

Amalia

"kaduffel" was a childhood memory of her pronunciation. She died when i was quite young. of course you are correct a cursory glance at a German dictionary tells me kartoffel is accurate.

As for the roots of barbarity it is a historical reality that the leader of that german wolf pack (otherwise known as der fuehrer) patterned his drive east after the american settler's push west. He apparently looked west to other masters of barbarity for assistance. Barbarity permeates the entire species and can be observed in a variety of instances dotting the temporal existence of mankind. I am sure at some remote time the refined Swiss were eating each others brains.

And that is Mr. Post Extras to you.

Regards and clear skies,

Starramus, or Mr. Post Extras,

I am not sure where we have arrived right now.
I started to feel unsure and came back to delete
my post, as I felt that it could be understood
as rude, and it probably is. Please accept my apologies.

Here we say Herdöpfel, which means
Herd = Oven
Öpfel = Apple.

So you can see that we are not really that far from the Germans.

Clear Skies!

Amalia

I guess we will have to remain friendly barbarians as long as you promise not to eat my brains. We certainly have strayed from M-51. I would imagine there are throngs of barbarians inhabiting a good many of the systems there too. Even big galaxies eat little galaxies. It seems the natural order of things.

Regards and clear skies,

The very best price on Zeiss 10X56 Victory FL is $1749 at Adorama in NYC. I bet you can't find a pair of them in any "hock shop". Who that can afford such quality would find themselves in the neccessity of pawning such an instrument?

Amalia, which binos did you get? The name might be buried in the long list of replies. I am definitely intrigued. I think you still owe this thread a picture. I can lend you my digital camera. Nice review!

Thank you Kevin!

By now my better binos are
Leica Trinovid BN 10x32 (for promenades)
Swarovski LE 8.5x42 (allround bino, day and night, also great for birding)
Zeiss Victory FL 10x56 (the text of this thread was about this one)
Zeiss Victory FL 8x56 (both Zeiss get only used as astronomy binos)
and Fujinon FMT-SX 16x70.

Feels good.

Amalia
