My first suggestion is to turn OFF the music or at least provide an obvious at-the-top means for visitors to do so. Some people don't LIKE having that stuff start up immediately and automatically, both for the audio noise and for the system drain it can cause.

I agree. I usually have my speakers off. Getting sound by default, unless it's a site you go to specifically BECAUSE there's sound you want, is considered one of the web designer's No-No's. Just because you CAN do it doesn't mean you should.

Other than that, it's obvious you've put a lot of effort into this site, and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest. I enjoyed the links page -- a lot of useful references there.

I have to admit I don't like sound on websites, unless I'm specifically looking for it. I know a maritime photo website that, if your speakers are on, provides a nasty surprise in the form of a very loud ship's siren...

I didn't see any Flash!

Primarily because I haven't installed it in my system.

But that's a good point about avoiding proprietary technologies in general-purpose web sites as much as possible. Ever since "The Browser Wars" between Netscape and Microsoft, there have been a lot of issues about web designs being universal. There are some clever techniques that work on some browsers but not others. Those are best avoided if you want to reach as many people as possible.

Designing web sites that work equally well on ALL browsers is not trivial. Most of the newer browsers, Firefox, Safari, Camino, Opera, Konqueror, attempt to support as closely as possible the standards established by the World Wide Web Consortium, or w3c. Recently, Microsoft has begun to show interest in finally respecting those standards itself. When that happens, web site design and construction will become a lot easier.

What I have decided to do, for my own purposes, is to design for Firefox. If it works there, it should pretty much work in all the "modern" browsers, and since Firefox is free on Windows, if there are any problems in Internet Explorer, the viewer can easily shift.

None of these considerations really matter, however, if you keep your design simple, and use standard HTML. Simple works everywhere. The music and animations can be nice, in small doses. But they should never be the centerpiece of your page, and should never be necessary parts of it.

I only wish Microsoft would comply with the W3C standards rather than trying to "Create" a new standard...

If it wasn't for the IE specific coding, and non standards they employ, it would be SO MUCH easier to build websites...

And for the record, Simple HTML don't guarantee your site would work cross-browser... You still need to comply with the W3C standards.. And some of those standards are tough to follow. It took me almost a YEAR to get my site FULLY Compliant with W3C for XHTML and CSS2.0, and still compatible with all browsers... NOT an easy task...

its not that hard really you just have to make sure your coding is 100% all the time. I quite like interactive websites with lots of multimedia but i cant use flash though so i dont.

I think css is the best formatting tool you can use on a modern html website as it allows you to make quick and consistent styles. My latest website will be pure xhtml css2 but id quite like to make a more interactive website using php and mysql.

Looks nice though. I dont really rate white on black text or balck on white. Dont really know why but i find it easier to read when the background is a subtle shade like a light grey with black text. Anyone else find this?

Cant wait to see more

Good Luck
Alex

I'm the same way, Alex. I usually make my own backgrounds some muted color like a really light pale blue or yellow. Some people do a slight "texture" to their backgrounds to relieve the contrast a little.

It's a personal preference, I suppose. Some like more contrast, some less. Most people don't want too much or too little.

Thanks for all the feedback. As for the sound and flash at the top. I like it and its just for fun. I am going to include a mute button on the intro. I was also thinking about changing the background color, but I tried a few and havent found the right one yet. The only reason I did this is just for fun. Nothing more. Hopefully some of the info on the site can help others. That would be great.

Steve

I think it will be helpful, Steve. And the great thing about sites like this is that whatever others may suggest, it's YOUR creation, and ultimately you can do whatever you want with it.
