OK.......let's keep the thread going with this basic instruction on ALIGNMENT and SETUP.
1. Don't use the 8 internal batteries. Buy a separate 12 volt power source, either from Celestron or a good automotive 12 volt pack.
2. Download and install the latest firmware from the Meade web site...right now it is 43Eg for the 497 hand controller.
3. When you get your firmware on the scope do a RESET with the hand controller. Then setup the time, date, and SITE, and correctly setup Daylight Savings Time.......it's a YES right now (April). The PE version should do time and date automatically but check it anyway.
4. Do a Calibrate Motors.
5. Do a TRAIN drives........in both DEC and RA, the controller is a little tricky here and you can easily miss training on one of them.
6. You can do all of the above inside the house or in the backyard with a small TARGET on a tree or wall a distance away from the scope.
7. Setup the mount outside with a bubble level........LEVEL of course. PE version is different; read the manual.
8. Put the scope in the HOME position......read the manual!!
9. I made a boo boo on this one! and erased it!
10. Then do a TWO star alignment.........BRIGHTEST STAR should have already been selected in the hand controller.
11. The scope will NOT hit the alignment stars exactly......center the proper star and push ENTER.......do this again for the second alignment star.
12. Use a widefield eyepiece to align .......something greater than 20mm.........yes I know more magnification is better...........but for beginners this works first time AND they will be less frustrated finding the alignment star and centering it in the eyepiece.
13. As you noticed the factory finder is really useless! Buy a right angle finder or a Telrad style finder to use for alignment. Rigel makes a nice small telrad type finder. Google "Rigel Quickfinder".
Now GOTO something............you did download the TOURS ??? NO....... well no problem, just get a skychart off the internet and GOTO one of the open cluster MESSIER (M) objects. Pick a bright one like M44, or M42.......or GOTO a planet. There that was not very hard. Have fun!
By the way if you stay inside a certain constellation you can SYNC on a star or object in that constellation........then your gotos will be very accurate in that part of the sky. Center the star or object and hold down the ENTER key for 2 seconds, the hand controller will BEEP and ask you to press Enter again.......there ......now you are SYNCED!
GOTO wherever you like in that part of the sky........you can use this technique as you move from constellation to constellation and continue to have excellent GOTOS.

Some Items for a Hassle free Alignment of ETX125PE > Remember to Program the ZIP code of the area your viewing from. > The base side with all the connector jacks should be facing WEST. > When the controller asks you to align on the brightest star, you need to verify which star its looking for (depressing the '?' button will display this star name)as the star is not necessarily close to where the scope has slewed. > Pressing the button above the '?' which has a light bulb Icon will turn the view finder on or off as well as the red led on the end of the controller. I've had all kinds of problems with the GoTo on my scope, but this board helped me solve them - working great last time out. Couple of my problems:
1. Meade set the location to Calif when I sent it in for warranty repairs.
2. Meade set the target to terrestrial - I didn't find that one for quite some time.
3. Using internal batteries - now have a Celestron Power Tank.
4. Didn't get the EXACT time - now set it from internet time site.
Thanks again.

Once you have aligned the scope you can use the SYNC function to make the GOTOs in a selected part of the sky MORE ACCURATE.
How? Simply goto a star or object within the constellation you want to search accurately. Center the star or the object, and hold down the ENTER key for two seconds, the controller will BEEP, and ask you to push the ENTER button again to SYNC.
Once you do this your gotos within that constellation, or sky area, will be more accurate. However they may be not as good on the opposite side of the sky.
This is a good technique to use to JUMP your way around the sky by adjoining constellations. Just keep SYNCing on an object within the next constellation (near the one you were viewing) and walk your way across the sky with good gotos EVERYWHERE! I LOVE the SYNC Function! Provided by Joe Lalumia

Controller Troubleshooting:
You should ALWAYS do a RESET on the hand controller after doing a FIRMWARE upgrade. There have been several trouble posts where bits and pieces of the OLD firmware were causing issues with the NEW firmware. Several different types of alignment problems have been solved by simply doing a RESET.
This is also the right time to RE- Calibrate Motors, and RE-Train Drives. Also check all the time, date, site, and daylight savings time data and reset these as needed. Provided by Joe Lalumia

Dick's Patches
If you want to install Dick Seymour's Autostar PATCHES, the simplest way is to download the trial version of the Star Patch software, and then after installation, download the latest "Meade" firmware AND patch using the Starpatch trial version.
Here is the web page with all the downloads and patches if you want to do it manually, however the Starpatch software will do it almost automatically, and even the trial version is twice as fast as the Meade factory Autostar software. http://www.stargps.ca/downloads.htm
Be sure to read the README file before you install the patch. Of course they also have the GPS Patch for their product. I have found that these patches work with the ETX, the LX90, as long as you have the 497 hand controller.
