Getting Magnification with DSI Pro? new
      #1563646 - 04/24/07 10:42 AM

I was looking at my DSI Pro, and my eyepieces, and wondering how I'm going to put the two together to get higher magnification shots. I don't see how I'd tie the two together. Additionally, most of my eyepieces are 2". I'll continue to search in the forum, but not finding anything yet.

Also, is it typical practice to use Barlows to get the closer in shots, say like for Saturn? How does the quality of such barlow affect the images? I've seen APO barlows, and barlows of all sorts. What's a good rule for selecting a barlow for this use? Thanks.

Get a good quality barlow instead, like a 2x or 3x Televue. cheap low quality barlows are better doorstoppers

Yes 97% of all imagers use barlows or powermates to get a bigger image scale. I have an Meade APO barlow and my Televue barlow hammers it. Just because it says APO doesnt mean its better

Oh, so the Barlow is ALL that's really used in many shots then. I knew eyepiece projection was one method, but there are many things my wife and I have to learn. That clears up a good deal on the Barlows. (I'll have to start reading reviews on Barlows I guess, unless I go with the method of the more money it costs, the better it must be).

Well there are a lot of nice Barlows out there. A good guide would be Excelsis. Now, I say guide because there are some weird reviews in here but it should help you sort out the lemons anyway

What you're looking for is called an eyepiece projection adapter. They were common when film was in wide spread use, but not so much anymore. I have one, but I much prefer to use a Barlow or a Powermate. You might be able to make an eyepiece projection adapter from PVC plumbing parts. What you need is a 1-1/4" drain pipe adapter to mout onto the DSI Pro converted to something that will grab onto your projection eyepiece. The magnification factor will be approximately the projection distance divided by the focal length of the eyepiece.

I only ever add a barlow for more magnification...

I get what a Barlow is, but not a "Powermate". I looked at the Excelsis site and the powermate does the same thing, but cost twice as much between the Televue Barlow and Powermate?

[edit] Just looked up more info on the Tele Vue site. That makes more sense now. Another question came to mind regarding the DSI though. What's the focal length of the DSI pro?

A camera with no lenses doesn't have a focal length. If you are asking how to calculate magnification, it depends on how you display the image, so I usually scale my images based on print size or viewing size on a monitor and use a little trig to calculate it.

Yes, I was trying to figure out magnification. Trying to get as close to 200 magnificication as possible with the DSI Pro, and wasn't sure if I'd need a 2x, 2.5x, or 3x et cetera to get there. Such a great hobby.

From what I can gather a Powermate is really just a self-contained eyepiece projection system; a very good projection 'eyepiece' built into an extension tube. I had a chance to compare a 5x Powermate with my adjustable eyepiece projection unit and I really liked the Powermate. My old eyepiece projection unit is versatile (I can use several different projection eyepiece), but in comparison the Powermate is much lighter, compact, and does a very nice job.
