I've finalized version 2.0 of the Mag-7 atlas, though I don't know when/if the simple black and white and color versions will be updated here on CN (and yes, the spurious Mag-0 stars are gone). In the meantime, I also created a *deluxe* version that includes representation of the milky-way (the most asked for feature). This is in a single, 21-page PDF file that is about 18 megabytes. I've uploaded that to the internet archive and it can be found at:
http://www.archive.org/details/Mag_7_Star_Atlas
Other changes include: different symbols for different DSOs, new color scheme (no red), the 11a supplemental chart (Virgo cluster region) plots stars to 8.5, and many galaxies show an *approximation* of their orientation (though I didn't correct for North isn't up on the two polar charts, sorry), and more recent data from the Washington Double Star catalog was used (the 2006.5 CD).
I had a couple copies of the deluxe version printed in color at Staples (they are charging 39-cents a page at the moment), and they came out rather nicely.
Enjoy, andrew

I am pleased to hear that.
I wonder if the Beginners forum might use a mention of this (I don't want to shotgun-post, I just don't how many track postings in the various other forums here).
cheers, andrew

I'd go ahead and post it there. A lot of people never read the Stellar media Forum.

First let me say that it looks great.
Just five minutes before seeing the post in the beginners forum I had downloaded version 1 and printed the first page. I'm glad I didnt' print all of the pages (both B/W & color)!
At what size did you have this printed? I just printed page 1 on my home printer but was wondering if it could be enlarged? My eyes aren't what they used to be so if I could get them printed at 11x17 (or so) it would be great. Then if I can get SWMBO to laminate them while she's at work, I'd be set. My old Edmunds Mag 6 Atlas has seen better days.
Thanks

I only printed it on letter paper (as it was designed), but some people have sucessfully printed it on A3 paper, and one person printed one 24x26 map on a plotter as a poster. Some distortion may come into play -- depending on how your software expands a page to fit a different page size.

Looks great!! Nice clean layout that should be good in the field. I have already printed a copy for inclusion in my observing notebook. Came out fine on a B/W laser printer. I prefer 8.5/11" pages as everything else in my notebook uses these as well.
A couple suggestions now that the charts are done...
An index would be great, at a start a constellation index for quick page lookups, but even better would be an object listing with page numbers for all DSO's. (I know that is a bit of work)
You should probably also get a title page in there with acknowlegements for any data sources you used.

Hi Andrew
Thanks for making this available, it's quite nice.
Thanks also for cross posting it under beginners as I found it there.
I've got a solid ink printer that can shoot these out as color double sided pages pretty quickly, and with your permission, I'd like to print some for members of my astronomical society who would like them.

The creative commons license I chose is pretty liberal: the short of it is that you are free to use and/or distribute these for non-commercial purposes, you are also free to modify them or produce derived works that are licensed under the same terms. Sharing is encouraged.

On the left of the page in the red "View the book" box, is the link to the PDF (not as obvious as one might hope, I agree).

Love it!!
One more thought/idea for the novices that will use it. Would it be possible to put at the bottom, alongside or underneath the mag list, an explanation of the notations of the various markers ? IE double star and the symbol ect, ect ??

Top notch! I printed out 2 copies, one for me and one for my observing buddy. It gets heavy use during planning sessions. I put the sheets in page protectors, arranged so that two pages form a single map, then use a wet-erase to circle the evening's targets. - Rick

Of Andrew's suggestions, this one alone would greatly improve the ease of use. Maybe something along the lines of the quick reference page you see in S&T's pocket atlas?

I've started working on the indices (constellations and objects), but it will take a bit of time. In the meantime, I've just done up a preliminary Legend and Credits page (attached).
