I went for a stroll around the surface of the gibbous moon last night using my trusty 105mm AstroPhysics apo. What to draw? There is always so much to tempt me, and I find the choice is never an easy one! Eventually I settled on Schiller, such an unusual shape (though instantly recognisable to any seasoned lunar observer), as it was well placed near the terminator and looking particularly dramatic, and still an outstanding target on my sketching list.
Clouds came and went, and the seeing varied from being average to poor, but I was enjoying my meeting with the moon and the tranquillity of the lonely sketching vigil. After a while I found that I had to rotate the diagonal to keep the scene comfortably in view, and of course the whole landscape turned and shifted too as if the long slumbering moon had undergone some cataclysmic event! Up to that point I had almost stalled with this sketch, but the new slant of the landscape made me see the scene anew and inspired me to continue.
I noticed a brightly lit crater rim segment hanging in the lunar night, linked by a slender bridge of light to the area I was sketching. I made this the end point of the sketch, and later discovered that the bridge was the edge of Segner, linking my daylight scene to Zucchius just emerging into the lunar dawn.
Details: Subject: Schiller and environs Scope: 105mm F6 AstroPhysics Traveler, LXD55 mount, 2x Barlow, 2.5mm TV Nagler (~480x) Date: 28th April 2007, 20.40-22.15 UT Lunation: 11.6 days (89.4% illumination) Seeing: Antoniadi III Conditions: Calm, temp. ~15oC Sketch: White and black pastel pencils, white and black chalk pastels, blending stump and dry sponge, on black 'Canford' paper, sketch size 11 inches x 8 inches

Sally this is an incredibly beautiful sketch and wonderful observing report! Schiller is such a bizzare looking crater and you've captured it's unique topograpy so powerfully with this medium. I'm so happy you got a chance to check this one off of your lunar target list. Exquisite sketch!

Sally,
A beautiful, dramatic and very accurate observation of Schiller and environs. This crater has always intrigued me and you have done an excellent job rendering it. The shadows and detail over the crater floor and walls are well depicted. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Rich, Carlos and Rony, thank you It seems an age since I've flexed my lunar sketching fingers, so last night's session was very therapeutic indeed!

Sally, I can't put in words how beautiful I think this sketch is. The extra time you spend on details put this creation way over the top. I looked carefully at this crater last night. I passed on this crater because it looked a bit too tough for an hour sketch. When I look at Schiller in the future, I'll always think of this sketch you made. Frank

Wonderful carving sketch of the lunar surface in this area Slit like Schiller, captured so well and is rendered with great skill and attention. Yes the way our Moon rolls, and the light changes so dramatically can effect when you end a sketch. The sketch almost becomes a completely different one to the one you started. You opted to end as the light offered up Segner, always the new light brings that edge in the darkness that gives extra energy to the image You have a powerful sketch there Sally

Sally,
You've made a very fine sketch of a fascinating lunar feature. I enjoyed reading your musings out under the night sky as you made the drawing, too.
Crater Schiller happened to be the subject of my second lunar sketch. I chose it because it caught my eye as I surveyed the lunar landscape--sound familiar? It was done just one lunar day before your drawing. I used white sketch paper and graphite pencils. It is mirror-reversed from your sketch but I think you will recognize it. The sketch can be seen here in my gallery.
Best,

Tommy and Neoweb, thank you
Michael, thank you for your kind words - I love your Schiller sketch! It is crisp and well behaved while mine is somehow dark and dangerous!! I hope you don't mind but I took the liberty of borrowing your sketch and cropping/re-orienting it so that I could compare the two side by side. We were definitely both looking at Schiller with the same eyes I think

Marvelous sketch and report Sally, almost as good as flying over there!
always interesting to see two sketches side by side for comparison, a different view and technique but two great drawings of the moon!

Hey Rich, how come your fantastic sketch of Schiller has such a different angle of view? it looks like looking right down on it is it because the moon itself 'wobbles' a bit or so?

Kris I'm not certain but I think that the sketch was made in favorable libration. But then again, it could be just my inability to get it right.
