Toucam theory link new [Re: Tom L]
      #175183 - 08/19/04 10:09 AM

Hi, I posted this link in the Computers&Astronomy forum already (in the qastrocam thread), but I thought some people over here might benifit from it, too.

It's in French, I hope enough people understand the language (this being a global community). The document is 6 pages long.

http://astrosurf.com/astrobond/Webcam_RAW.pdf

Some things I learned from it:
* Besides the 1/4" CCD chip, the tucam contains a processor (SAA8116HL) and an eeprom.
* Internally, the CCD chip has a 10 bit resolution.
* the tucam pixel size is 5.6micrometers
* It's possible to replace the color CCD with its' B&W cousin (if you're brave enough)
* It's also possible to reprogram the eeprom to get raw images, for example.
* The color filter arrangement is called a Bayer filter(images provided in the PDF)
* RGB values are obtained by averaging neighbouring pixels with the right color filter.
* The spatial resolution at 640x480 is 1.3 times the resolution at 320x240 due to this averaging technique (he did some tests).

PS: Even if you don't know French, you might try to read it out loud to get an idea what he's talking about (requires a lot of concentration).. I can read Spanish and German this way, even though I have never learned them. It's amazing how few words you have to understand to be able to follow a story .

Photographic Moon Book by Alan Chu new [Re: Tom L]
      #218770 - 10/11/04 02:09 PM

Hi!

I think this could be usefull for people imaging the moon.

It is the 'Photographic Moon Book' by Alan Chu.

It's free and you can download it as PDF.
URL: http://moonbook.hkas.org.hk/

It's about moon features, imaging techniques...
Lots of photographs and maps are included.

Hope you find this usefull!

Mario

Hansvi,

Colimation is so very important for planetary imaging - here's the link that showed me just how important:

Hi,

I use IRIS program. I find that the iris registering function is more efficient that registax's one.

You can download it here : http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/us/iris/iris.htm

Many interresting information about IRIS in the following site in the ARTICLE zone ( very sorry, it is also in french... but there are many screen copies that can help)

Just downloaded registax and the program bears no resemblance to Arcsoft or Photoshop. How do I use it? I'm not getting anywhere with it.

In experimenting with Registax and ArcSoft there is an artifact of the processing that emerges. In ArcSoft you can notice when the sharpening mask has been overused on a photo. In Registax that sharpening mask seems to be used extensively to the point where the photo takes on a life of it's own. I saw one photo on this board of the moon that was processed through Registax and the optics of the scope, though adequate to produce a good image, was overridden by the the imaging program enough that the image of the moon had a "cutout" look too it. I've noticed this on some otherwise excellent planetary images that have that "cutout" look. Why is the Registax program preferred above other imaging programs that are available? (I know it's free but that aside...)

Hi Les,

Registax is my personal favorite software for the first steps in planetary and lunar imagage processing (frame quality estimation, frame registration, stacking & wavelet sharpening). Everything in Registax is adjustable so I can taylor the settings according to the image characteristics like the FFT frequency band for quality estimation, quality & alignment-difference cutoffs for stacking and wavelet parameters although it took me some time to find my prefered settings - the drawback of the possibilities.
I totally agree to your point, it's easy to overprocess and create tons of artefacts with Registax, examples are seen quite often on the web IMHO. My usual routine is to decrease contrast to about 80-85% after stacking and choose the bands for wavlet-sharpening carefully - usually the usage of two bands is totally sufficient. Most of the time I use a linear wavelet-scheme, Initial 1, Step 0, using layers 2:1, 3:1 and/or 4:1 depending on noise is ok for most images, 1:1 can even be decreased below zero to reduce noise. Of course it's useless to try to squeeze details out of an image that aren't there but that problem should be present for using all softwares, maybe Registax is more seductive to overprocessing

Cheers & clear skies,
Oliver

Thanks Oliver. I think part of the confusion is the use of webcams and the techniques that they dictate for processing. I'm using a digital camera and processing from one image so far. When the adapter for my camera arrives then I may begin to use other images from the same session.

In the meantime I've been modifying images using hue, saturation, brightness, etc and with a light sharpening. ArcSoft has settings for red, green , blue separate, or RGB combined. Since my first moon shot a couple of weeks ago I'm been forced to explore the program further. Registax did freeze my screen up. Don't know what that was about but the plug in the wall was the solution.

My screen also freezes with Registax but only if I skip back to a previous step to try and redo it. When this happens I hold down Ctrl, Alt, Delete (follow the sequence as listed and hold each key down till all 3 are depressed) to open Task manager and shut down Registax. Unplugging the CPU from the wall is dangerous and not advised when the processor is running.

For the processing challenged like myself; a fairly straightforward explanation of interpreting histograms.
