I made an observation of the impressive globular cluster M22 (NGC 6656) in Sagittarius on June 11, 2007 (04:00 U.T.). This is one of the most impressive globular clusters in the heavens. It is only outshined by Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) and 47 Tucanae (NGC 104), these two visible mostly to southern observers. The core appears to contain over a million stars! The extensions of the cluster appear endless. M22 lies approximately 10,000 light years from us and measures ~100 light years across (32 arc-minutes (or slightly larger than the Moon). This is one of my favorite globular clusters to observe. I hope that you all like my observation.

Carlos,
Excellent sketch. From your latitude it is way more impressive than from mine. I saw Omega Centauri last June from southern Arizona through a 16 inch SC. It was beyond description and from your drawing the same must be true for M-22.

M22 probably my favorite glob. If Omega Centauri were a bit higher in my sky i am sure it would win out though. It is a gargantuan Christmas ornament just floating above the horizon in the 20". Makes me yearn for a trip downunder.

Thank you both for your compliments on my observation of M22 in Sagittarius. This is one of my favorite globular clusters to observe. It appears as an explosion to my eyes. The best of luck in your own observations.

Carlos, this is a great set of sketches. The way you handle the simmering granularity in your globular clusters is amazing.

Jeremy and Rony,
Thank you for your kind comopliments on my M22 observation. I always look forward to reviewing this impressive globular cluster in the Summer sky. I am glad to be observing once again, but your observations are the next best thing when I am unable to observe.
Jeremy- You must be very excited (as well as David, Erika, abd Sol) about your soon to be released book. We are all looking forward to it.

Thanks Carlos. I don't know about Sol, Erika, David or Rich, but I know I'm in a pins-n-needles situation waiting for it to start shipping...which should be any day now. I need to get my hands on a few copies for a presentation I'm giving next month.
It's been really inspiring to see all the work everyone is posting here. I wish I was able to reply to every one of them.

Carlos, that's a great sketch. I'd love to see your rendition of M55 next to M22 for the sake of comparison!

Mark,
Thank you for the compliment on my observation of M22. I will try to observe M55 in the future for comparison.
Jeremy- I am certain that you book will become a classic for all visual observers.

Carlos,
What an outstanding rendering of M22! It just sparkles with light. Beautiful work.
I thought about your DSO drawings the other night. I had finished an observation of Vesta's position (in Oph) and moved my new 15x70 binoculars over to the Sag region. Even at only 15 power, M22 was an impressive sight, as were M8 and M20.
Like everyone, I too am eagerly awaiting the release of the new book.

Great sketch of m-22, this cluster has always looked a bit squashed like jup globe being fatter than it is tall, your sketch shows that very well,i wonder if the cluster is really shaped like that or just looks that way because it is so low in the sky for us northern hemisphere folks, great sketch very realistic.

Tommy,
Thank you for the compliment on my observation of M22. This is a spectacular globular cluster! It does appear flattened as you point out (not certain if by nature or by viewing angle). The best of luck in you own observations.

Carlos,
All of us are very excited about the appearance of "Astronomical Sketching: A Step-by=Step Introduction". I know the publisher has slipped the release date a few times. Looks like its on it's way now.
I've been away from CN for quite some time due to an illness in my family. Hopefully the situation will continue to improve so that I can spend some time sketching and hanging out at my favorite forum again. I've missed everyone here so much!
