Goodbye S & T
      #1669607 - 06/18/07 04:50 PM

I received my last subscription copy of Sky & Telescope. It is my last because I won't be renewing my subscription. It's kind of sad, because I have copies dating back to the late 1960's.
But I am leaving for a couple of reasons:
First, I think I've read enough on "Black Holes" and the "Big Bang" for three lifetimes. &
Second, I have heard enough from Mr. Fienberg.........I'm biting my tongue.

I figure that "Astronomy" and the new "Astronomy Technology Today" should be enough to fill the void.

And yet I fondly remember when S&T was a my favorite magazine and the page following the index had an interesting article or some magazine highlights by Richard Berry and not a sermon.

PJ, I did just the opposite
I felt that Astronomy had too much on the hard science. Extremely interesting stuff, but issues seemed to be so redundant, I let it go. I felt that S & T, in addition to the hard facts, offered more in the way of what amateurs relate to with observing and equipment. As for Mr. Feinberg, I try not to let politics get in the way of my hobby!!

FWIW: I just extended my subscription to S&T. If I had to give reasons, chief among them would be the magazine's coverage of the "hard" science of astronomy. Since the science is constantly evolving, I don't find the coverage of it in any way repetative. And my interest in it is such that I can't get enough.

As for the editorials, whether I agree with Mr. Fienberg on a particular subject or not, they generally make me think. I count that as a good thing. In any case that single page represents maybe 1% of each issue. Not enough to sway my judgement one way or the other.

S&T is definitely not the same publication now that it was in the late '60s - early '70s when I first became acquainted with it. It can't be, not if it's going to survive in a world that won't hold still.

To each their own...

Hard science indeed. Their hard science is structured so they can have "artists rendition" of meteors plunging into the earth. Looks good on the news stand.

I long for the days of S&T and the ATM section. Time change I'm afraid.

I feel the science articles are sometimes difficult to understand. I am longing for an astro amateur orientated magazine which has more equipments articles.

I would agree with you there......provisionally anyway. I suppose I should clarify what I meant by redundant. For the last 2-3 years, when I would read articles on the the same subject, I found that about 80% was content I already knew, and 20% was the new, evolving portion. Perhaps it is a publishing philosophy to repeat things they have already addressed in an attempt to educate and hopefully spark interest in those that don't read it regularly like most of us here on CN. But for me, too much of it seemed repetitive as I was reading the articles. As you say, to each his own. Life would be boring without variety

I have been a subscriber to S&T and Astronomy for decades. I also subscribe to Astronomy Now, published in the UK. I find it a refreshing change compared to S&T and Astronomy's articles.

Fienberg or whatever reminds me of Imus. They both think they heard in journalism 101 controversy sells. I make it a point to do two things in S & T...... don't give Fienberg the time of day and ignore my distaste for sandals on a grown man.

Hi Dave,

Yeah those are good ones. I let the Amateur Astronomy today lapse before I moved, but will probably pick it up again soon. My only nit with it was the amount of articles on observatories. I love 'em - they are cool - but I don't have room for one, so it was frustrating!!

I'm keeping my subscription to S&T, but I have to agree that the issues do seem to be getting a little thin. The August issue showed up today and seems about two-thirds the usual thickness from a year ago. I also enjoy ATT, but the second issue seems well overdue.
