ok here is my pic, not the best but you can tell where Im talking about. I called telescopes.com and the person I was talking to knew nothing about those. He just asked how I liked mine because he was thinking about getting one.

All the screws are in mine, although like some of the screws in the Z10 some of them were loose and wouldn't surprise me if they fell out.

wonder what size they are since telescopes.com has no clue. What purpose do they serve?

Glad you put the pic up, I was talking about a different screw. I did a google on Crayford focuser and couldn't find out anything about what they do. They are so close to the base I wonder if they control the rotation of the focuser itself around the base. Can you twinst it? If not I'd suggest you put a crisp picture up in the equipment section and pose the question.

Yeah I think Telescopes.com would have a better chance of explaining cold fusion than their own focuser

I don't know what they do, but here is a picture of one. I pulled it out. They appear to be a 4mmx.7 x 8mm long flat head.

Yes, the screws on the other side (by the writing that says "Zhumell, etc") are exactly the same size.

I'd bet they allow rotation of the focuser when loosened.
I kind of remember reading about them somewhere on CN...

I have my focuser off at the moment (flocking the tube) and the two philips screws on the bottom hold a small plate inside the focuser that the axle rides on.

The upper thumbscrew pushes on the plate and axle allowing the focuser knobs to function. The bottom thumbscrew runs through the plate allowing the focuser to lock, so without the two philips screws in place, that's all that's holding it in place.

The two screws on the top on either side of the Zhumell logo hold the roller bearing assembly. I'll definitely be adding a bit of Loctite to all of these screws.

For those interested, I have the measurements of the Zhumell 10" screws. I took a screw from each "set" (secondary adjustment, primary adjustment, primary locking) and threaded them on the measurement nuts at Lowes.

I measured the length at home with a metric ruler. All the threads are metric.

Secondary Adjustment Screw: M4 x 0.7 (length=32mm)
Primary Locking Screw: M6 x 1.0 (length=16mm to 17mm)
Primary Adjustment Screw: M7 x 1.0 (length=22mm to 24mm)

The lengths on some of the screws are given as a range - the lower number is up to the thread. The upper number is up to the head of the screw.

I grabbed a set of replacement springs for the primary mirror at ACE hardware - not sure if they fit yet as I haven't removed my primary to test, but the number ID of the spring (ACE's ID) was #28). I fit the primary adjustment screw in and it looked like it fit well.

Hope this helps.

Nice addition to the database thanks Jim.

Since I've had my replacement scope from Telescopes.com for a few weeks now I can start back on the modification/upgrades. Here is my current list of upgrades in what I consider more or less priority order.

  • Lock nuts on the Alt bearing bolts. Every Zhumell owner should do this before even using the scope. Just this week someone from Czechoslovakia posted about damaging his bearing by over tightening the bolts.
  • Replace the springs on the primary. The stock springs are severely under sized. I replaced mine with some from Ace and can actually take my primary out of the tube and put it back in without losing collimation.
  • Replace the laser collimator. I am on my third Zhumell laser. These things have more issues then I can name and can actually do more harm then good to the scope’s collimation. At a minimum use this with a Barlow to make it functional. I suggest getting a good set of tools like the CatsEye equipment or a real laser like the Howie Glatter.
  • Replace the collimation knobs on both the primary and secondary. This makes collimation so much easier. I got mine from Scopestuff but they are available from a number of different places including the famous Bob’s Knobs.
  • Replace the small brass rings on the Alt springs with a larger metal keyring. The brass rings are very weak and too small to use, they are down right dangerous. There are other solutions, see Scope-Gripps below for one example.
  • Add a Green laser pointer. I find this tool indispensable. I have the Scopestuff holder mounted just below the focuser, it doubles as a nice handle for moving the scope.
  • Add a Red Dot pointer. I and most others have the Telrad, although there are other options such as the Rigel. I’ve mounted mine on the 2” riser and added the dew shield with the mirror. Notice I actually put this after the GLP above. The Telrad is very nice but if you have marginally poor skies it can be difficult to use.
  • Add some quality eyepieces. The included 2” 26mm eyepiece is all but useless IMHO. The 9mm plossl is OK but of limited use. If you could add just one EP I would start with something like a 13mm Hyperion/Stratus. I’m a firm believer in quality EPs in fact I have roughly 3X the amount of $$$ invested in EPs then the scope itself. Thank you Uncle Al.
  • Add a Barlow. Presto you just doubled your Eyepiece collection. Many people recommend the Orion Shorty Plus but also check out the GSO 2” 2X sold by several vendors such as OWL.
  • Flock the Scope. I went one foot in on both ends of the scope and had a little extra which I used to go further down into the scope opposite the focuser. It is hard for me to judge how much this added to the contrast as I replaced my mirrors and most my eyepieces at the same time.
  • Replace Alt bearing Springs with Scope-Gripps. These are sold by the Astronomy-Shoppe and are pretty much required if you have any large eyepieces and finders mounted on your scope.
  • Various modifications to the Azimuth slides. A lot of people add wax and magic sliders and various “milk jug” washers or EbonyStar surfacing. My system came with the lazy susan system and I am very happy with it. The only mod was to lengthen the center bolt and add a lock nut.
  • Reverse the included Finder mount. I find it strange that the lip on the finder mount is at the bottom instead of the top. I reversed mine because if it comes loose the finder can slide out and crash to the ground. It is a little harder to keep the finder aligned this way but it does work and I feel better not worrying about the finder sliding out.

Possible future upgrades.

  • Add Degree Circles for a “Push-To” system. To be perfectly honest I haven’t had any desire to add this as I’m having too much fun with my Star Atlas and Telrad Charts learning the skies. Maybe down the road I’ll consider it.
  • Add a new Focuser. The stock focuser is OK but has a lot of slop in it. I’m thinking either a Moonlite CR-2 or a Feathertouch, neither is cheap.
  • Add some filters. Couple of Nebula filters and maybe some color filters for planetary viewing.
  • Add a new Finder Scope. I’ve been smitten by the Stellarvue F50.
  • Add more Eyepieces. Can you say Ethos? When does it end? I could use a few more high powered EPs for planetary use too.
  • Upgrade Scope to a truss and start all over. You will notice the Oringinal Poster has already done this.

Wow Tom you the man !

By the way I can't figure out an upgrade for my StarStructure.....except of course a bigger one.
You do not want to go to Chiefland and look through
a 20". In October I understand there will be a 32".
You've been warned. Come broke or don't come at all.

Well, I tried the springs from ACE...they seem a bit long. I tried to trim them down but they're really strong and I could not cut them with my tools - they're hard as can be!

Tom, these springs are 1" long, but the stock Zhumell springs are 1/2" long. Can you describe your replacement springs?

I've had my Z10 for about 6 months and I'm getting the "Pimp my Pipe" bug too. When I got it I new about the ALt Bearing nuts getting loose so 1st thing I did was replace the nuts with Nylocks on the inside.

Another thing I'd recommend is replacing the finder scope mount altogether, if not the whole finder scope. I have found that the holes in the OTA are drilled too large and the finder mount has some play to it. Not only that having just the 2 adjustment screws makes getting the findersope aligned a bit cumbersome.

Eyepieces...I got the Zhumell EP/Filter kit when I ordered the scope, they are adequite at best, I did the math and if you breakdown the kit per piece the EP's are only $11-$12. I will be ordering my first decent EP at the 1st of the month, one of Baader Hyperion, Orion Stratus, WO SPL or Burgess Optics HBM.

Red Dot finder. An absolute must, though I haven't yet. Aiming a Dob with a 90 degree finder is a bear at best. WIth the Finder at least you can get in the proper vicinity then use your angled finder to really dial it in.

BTW guys this is a great thread. I don't think from what I've seen that this is an optional list of things too do witht his scope. AS good as it seems, there area a lot of little shortcuts that the MFG took that can be easily rectified for minimal out of pocket expense.

Jim - I'd say my primary springs are about an inch long and probably compress to less then half that. I did have some others about the same length that were a little too strong. I wish I would have written the spring number down off the Ace drawer.

I just upgraded my azimuth bearing to glassboard with virgin Teflon pads. Man is the movement ever buttery. Faaaaaaarrrr better than the turtle-waxed furniture glides. It's an easy upgrade if you have something to cut a circular piece of laminate from the sheet of glassboard, which is available to Home Depot for $27 for a 4'x8' sheet (you'll only need a 2'x2' square).

Nice, Jax!

Tom, if the springs are too long doesn't that change the focal plane significantly enough to cause an issue?

The only thing I would contest with Tom's suggestions is the barlow. Barlow's just aren't useful in a decent sized dob like this. They dim the views significantly. These scopes can see so much with just a few good EPs. You want to dance in moon craters? Just get the Zhumell 1.25" EP kit..that 4mm will drag you right down into Marvin Martian territory with good seeing..no barlow required.

Barlows are for refractors. I'm convinced of that.
