Phil, yes, the GEM is mounted on a solid, (cast iron --- I think), pier which in turn sits on a 2ft. cube of concrete isolated from the concrete base itself which is 6" thick. Phil and Tim: It was somewhat of a toss up whether to remove that brick monstrosity behind the dome but, realising that the weight and volume of it somewhat exceeds the dome and its base, it's much easier to shoulder the latter and carry it around to the front porch when viewing to the West is required ! Besides, my Hilde still needs somewhere to put her feet up ! In all seriousness though, the view from the dome spans something like Northwest through East to Southwest. Beyond that, the vista is totally obscured by the house. But, as they say; "What goes around, comes around" ! Although I signed up for this forum recently, somehow I got lost with various other internet searching, and forgot all about visiting here! Anyway, I thought I'd begin by showing off my very first telescope that I bought a few months ago. I see that there are many folders in this forum that I can start reading and posting in. I guess you'll see me popping up here and there. I'm still learning how to use this scope. I have been able to take some nice photos of the moon, but as you see by my avatar, not so lucky with Saturn. I hope to be able to improve my AP skills one of these days, AND, I'm very interested in getting into deep sky object photography. Note: Image altered to fit the CN image size limit. Many will also remember that after its construction, a lively debate ensued as to what this observatory should be named and ultimately, the best came from Midnight Dan with, what else but the most apt "Telstar" ! I now have to report that a little time ago, following my last birthday, my dear CN friend and colleague Peter9, produced and sent me a superb nameplate which I have now had the pleasure to place proudly on the surface my "dome". I thought therefore, that a few pictures of the set up were now appropriate together with a few words to show my gratitude to Peter. Thanks Peter !
