Looks great, Tel. This is very much along the lines of where my plans were headed. Please let us know how you like it, especially regarding flexure. I think it was Beo that reported some problems in that area with the Side-By-Side mount.

Great-looking setup Tel! Will follow your footsteps and do the same twin-saddle with an N8 & WO66mm refractor, maybe the CG-5 ASGT can handle this 2-scope load? Thanks.

Best,

Thank you for all the kind comments guys: much appreciated.

The instrument payload in my case, Hernando, I gauge to be about 10.5 Kg.(23lbs.). That is made up of the ca. 5Kg (11lbs) Nexstar 8i OTA and the ca. 3.5Kg. (8lbs) 4" refractor OTA, the rest being attained by the addition and rotation of the various accessories needed at at any one time. (I have since removed the finder 'scope on the refractor as superfluous). The claimed max. payload for the Skywatcher HEQ5 Pro, on which the whole sits, is ca. 16Kg. (35lbs.) so the actual load will represent something like 66% of the maximum; well within capacity in my opinion.

Skip, you quite rightly, raise some concern over flexure.

I have to admit that I was persuaded to go this twin saddle route by the manufacturer's claims of stability in as much as the bar is produced from a solid ingot with a final minimum thickness of 20mm (3/4+ "). However, although my own bar is as yet untested, (English weather-- what else ?), Andy, (Mushroom Bill) and I got together a few weeks ago to test out both of my OTAs on his own identical bar.

My DSLR was attached to the 8i's OTA to simulate an imaging session while my Meade DSI was placed on the 4" OTA to guide. After balancing all to our satisfaction which necessitated the use of an additional counterweight, three exposure levels of 5 mins. 10 mins. and 15mins. were attempted.

As a result, we were able to show that stars held their shape out to 10mins. (at least), and probably would do so even out to 15mins, except when coming to the end of the final test, "yours truly" happened to brush against the DSI camera ! (Well it was getting late by then) !

So, at the moment I have confidence in the set up but of course; final proof of the pudding........

Best regards,
Tel

Very spiffy looking set-up Smitty, I like the GLP and RACI set up. The GLP mount looks perfect.
