Hi Chris,
Congratulations on a truly great set-up !
(I'd have a word with those neighbours of yours though and see if they won't tone down their house lights a tad) !
Best regards, Tel

Nice Chris! Not sure I'd call it an 8SE any more since the "SE" is the mount, but a beautiful setup nonetheless! I'll have to go over the the "other forum" (obsevatories?) and check out your thread. I love the dramatic lighting you set up for the photos! I too am jealous!

Hi Chris,
Nice work! Congratulations on a great build. And thanks for documenting and posting the project. You have inspired me and if I can get enough trees cleared out will try the same build.
Cheers, Doug

modest setup, cheap freebie "meade" webcam that came packaged with their 70mm dept. store achromats. So cheap a webcam Meade doesn't even support it. I have pushed it beyond it's limits, lol. Can't wait to get a real planetary imager..

The Philips SPC900/880, Celestron NexImage, and Orion SSC-3 are low cost alternatives. Above that cost level there's no limit.

Don't see much reason to show my stock 8se but I'm glad I got the bundle...not that the glass is so primo but it had the 31mm and a decent broad filter. Can't imagine working the system without the power tank and I got the hood (no heaters yet). I'm a definite newby on the learning curve with the nextar. Been fighting all the things I'd heard about while reading and researching over the 6 months leading up to my choice the SCT. It's taken more than a few nights to figure out how to tune things up precicely enough to slew Where things are in FOV. But twice this week i've achieved success. I have fairly dark skies here on the side of a small mtn. Ar 750 ft and fairly far away from the metro lights. I have a decent idea of optics doing professional videography (in some situations with high magnifications) i'm acustomed to guality glass. I must say, the optics and even the collumation of the OTA is ultra high quality But if theres any question if this new found interest will stick...? On one of my maiden voyages night before last, i was locked on m31 (i know that's a basic and immature target to mention). I've checked it out many times with binos. But this was the first time with my night vision tuned and a decent dark sky. At the very moment I realized I could actually see the shape of the galaxy, a meteor streaked through the very center of the FOV. So that qualifies me as being totally hooked and thrilled to have that OTA for future definite upgrades. I'll get a 2" diag and a zoom first then a laser. I like the sky surfer lll as far as ease of use. Don't understand a diag on a spotter scope...? Wouldn't that be tough to line up using line of site? If someone could explain that
I am both in appreciation and awe at what I've read...you guys are the masters and it's just awesome to be able to hear what you are all doing and accomplishing. Without the forum I wouldn't even understand how to work the gears on my set up So thank you so much for all of the sharing which I know is time consuming. It really helps a guy like me who stands at the edge of the casim...guess I need to warn my bank acct.

Welcome LitteRock to our fine little forum.
You mentioned the finder with a diagonal. I am assuming you are referring to the Right Angle Correct Image (RACI) finders that Orion and others market. No problem using them as they ARE image corrected - meaning left is left, up is up, etc. Very easy to use and recommended. I have the Orion 9 x 50 RACI. Works very well on the 8SE. My only complaint is when I use it on the 8SE OTA on my equatorial mount, there is no way to adjust the diagonal for orientation (twisting it so the EP is in a convenient location) without messing up the finders alignment with the OTA. So I leave it in a compromise position and have to play contortionist at times. Not sure if there is a better RACI that allows the swiveling of the diagonal without altering the alignment.
Hey, no apologies needed on M31! Its a wonderful object to look at and ponder. Any object that produces wows & wonders from spectators and enthusiasts alike is fair game and we would love to hear about them. Why, I've spent at least 5 nights - 20 + hours or so - in the last 3 months - trying to image M31!
Glad you are off to a good start. If you have any questions or run into any rough spots, you know where to come for help.
Cheers and clear skies! Doug
