Hi Jose,

A very warm welcome to CN and to this Nexstar forum !

In my opinion, a great choice combination of 'scope and mount with which you will, without doubt, have no problem carrying out both visual and indeed imaging aspects of our hobby if you should so wish !

Best regards,
Tel

Thanks Tel. I am very, very pleased with this combo, after a 2 plus 3 and a all star polar align, I am talking middle of the crosshairs accurate and excellent tracking. Putting everything in place for beginning astrophotography.

ps: happy B-day Tel!

BC, great spot to place the SkyFi - I have it too (connecting to Sky Safari on an Android tablet) but wasn't too happy with having it swing around or letting the cable twirl around as I GoToed. Now I know where to put it.

And if anyone can get into more details on the 8se/CG5 pairing, and how it compares to the 8Se Alt/Az mount, I'd appreciate it. I already know it's going to be way better for astrophotography - but how much more work is it to align, how much more pain is it to carry around, etc, etc. ? I suspect I'll be getting one in a year, but don't want to jump in so soon as I just got my telescope.

Hi Jetbuilder,

A very warm welcome to CN and to this Nexstar forum.

A great vintage 'scope: (in similar vein, I bought one of the last N8is back in '06 which has certainly served me well) !

The whole assembly looks good to go with both a DSLR and Neximage installed. I note also that you're using the N5i's built-in wedge. Do you have any impressions with regard to its particular use and perhaps some images to share ?

Best regards,
Tel

P.S. I've just noticed, Adam, that you published you first image of your N5i back on the 17th. Jan.

A BELATED therefore, but nevertheless equally sincere welcome from me ! :

Lol, thanks I'm really proud of my old scope, but I just can't wait to get a gem scope.

Here are my two best shots I've taken with this setup.

I've noticed that the tracking is better in EQ mode.
I'm still working out how to accurately polar align it.
Tracking is still a hare off (very very rough polar alignment)but it's still better than alt-az.
I'm currently saving up for an autoguider. I've been using my meade LPI in the guidescope for a live view when using the slr.

Nice imaging, Adam !

You surprise me somewhat though in saying your N5i tracks better in EQ mode rather than Alt./Az. ! I had nothing but trouble with my tracking, years ago, when I attempted to place my N8i on an EQ wedge. Essentially, it was thought to be caused by the uneven and constantly changing hanging or resting weight of the OTA on the single mount arm, depending on where it was pointing in the sky. As a consequence, my N8i OTA now sits on a Skywatcher HEQ5 Pro GEM.

Incidentally, you mentioned your concerns over polar alignment. I'm sure you've already seen this relevant link, but just in case you haven't.............. it might just help ?

Tel, I think it may be because of the 5" smaller size and weight.....I recall reading somewhere that a 5" SCT was probably as big as you want to go for accurate EQ tracking on that kind of mount. Recall that Celestron used to make a line of 5" SCT with compact EQ mounts (as did some other manufacturers) that didnt have many complaints.
