I'm thinking about replacing the 3 nylon pads that act as the main azimuth bearing with an actual thrust bearing. I tore down an old automatic transmission last year and I got a few large diameter bearings that would work perfectly in it.
I'll post pics when I do it'

Great idea Donnie.

How do you secure it to the pier?. I'm toying with the idea of an all wood pier and top plate.

Thanks for posting.

Regards. Peter.

peter9, my pier is made up of concrete blocks, two to each layer then reversed.i didn't wont anything permanent. i made sure each laid flat by shimming the corners with thin pieces of plastic that i cut up from a large piece i purchased from a store here in town. its 5 blocks high and can be adjusted by just adding or subtracting blocks. on top i have a patio block to top it off. when i observe, i just put a peace of indoor out door carpet cut out to fit the patio block then set the table top on it. no securing. it works out just fine. i buried 2 concrete blocks then placed an patio block on top to asure a solid footing. the bolts on each side of the table top are for leveling. i will take a photo of it today to give you an idea of the setup. thanks, don

Thanks for the pics Donnie.

The new idea's and invention of members never fails to amaze me. Yours is no exception.

Is it as stable as the tripod or more so?. I suppect it must be quite stable as I see you also use an E.Q mount on there.

Regards. Peter.

i have no problem with the mount on its tripod. i probably could use the mount on its tripod but i like the table tops because i can just pick it up and carry it out side with out bumping the tripod legs on the door facings. in the field i use the tripod. this is really a great collection of forums to get ideas and learn, ask questions. its been a read help for me. i hope it stays around for a long time. i pulled up some info, on yorkshire, sounds like a real nice place to live and with a history going back to the roman empire. have a great day. donnie

Thanks!

Hi LittleRockDark,

A very hearty welcome to CN and to this Nexstar forum !

I must say I'm very envious of your Denk. Power and Filter Switch set up !

I don't know but having looked around myself a few years ago, these accessories seem to be as rare as hens' teeth over here. Our dealers just dont't seem to think they're worth stocking for some reason.

(Any Brits know differently )?

Best regards,
Tel

Thanks for the welcome Tel. This was a welcome addition, unlike the recent clouds. There's really no photo that can do justice to the hardware. After a few months handling the stock diag, it was shocking to handle the new rig. It is so substantial from what I expected. The shorty for SCT's will allow me to upgrade to bino if the misses is in good sprits towards my franklins come summer... Hope Rick's cool with this response and another pic. this isn't a commercial for denk but being a newbie, I saved up my questions...then 10 minutes with Russ on the phone equaled about 3 weeks research on the forum...

With all that back travel one would think that it would impede with the light path, read the post in the Cats and Casses section under 127 backfocus. seems by adding all that bach travel it will impair the effective optical diameter. Cool rig tho.
Here are my NexStar sisters

The difference seems to be about 1/4 inch longer at the visual back and about 3/4 inch longer to where the EP sinks into the diag. Denk built this around the S2 or (shortie) I'm not sure how to measure but I did pay attention to the difference in focus. Adding the 2" was about 4 x 1/4 turns clockwise difference. Switching to the FR or 2X requires 3 x 1/4 turns counterclockwise...which means the FR and 2X were actually almost on, or about 1/4 turn from focus compared with the stock 1.25 with the 2X. Focus still remains basically in the center of play. It's about 20 x 1/4 turns CW and about 20 x turns CCW to both ends. As far as FOV, the D-21 EP definltly delivers the "port like" effect described in the literature. Only one decent viewing night so far revealed improvement with a handful of DSOs, and definite clear improvements with Mars and Venus. Saturn shows extreme improvement over stock and the flat-wide field on Jupiter is new and exciting. My understanding is that I can add an extension tube as well and only then flirt with the edge of focal range.
