I was cruising the internet this morning and came across a great site for Astronomical terms. I have looked through the sticky threads but didn't see this listed.

Hi all, I am a beginner, but learning fast, thanks to all of those that are answering my posts. I looked at the link to the glossary. But, the word I was looking for was not in the listing. I have seen "vignette" several times in the forums. I looked it up in the dictionary, it did not seem to me that it pertained to astonomy. Would some one care to educate me? My guess here is, if you get a light leak you get a curly cue patern on your image. How is that fora guess? Probably way out there, but that is were I want to be!!!

Vignetting in photography means any process by which there is loss in clarity towards the corners and sides of an image. This can also apply to a visual image in certain circumstances. For example if you use an eyepiece not correctly matched to your telescope you may experience loss of image around the edge of the field of view.
Cheers,
DW

Vignetting largely seems to occur when we see beyond the field of view of the instrument so that we start seeing the out of focus image of the interior of the telescope or camera lens. Using a lens which does not cover as large a film plane as the film format the photographer is using can do it. Or using a wide angle eyepiece on a narrow angle telescope can have the same result.

I don't know how a word that refers to grape vines came to be used for this definition.

In older art terms a vignette is a small painting (usually a portrait, but doesn't have to be) in which the subject is enhanced by deliberately fading the background out. Traditionally it is round, and has an outside border of (here it comes!) vines, and little bunches of grapes. Sort of like a wreath.
