Hubert,

Can you provide just a little more info please? Will it not boot from the backup/boot CD, or is the computer not recognizing the CD drive, or....??

Oh, there are no mechanical problems with the 'puter. I just downloaded the Ubuntu and Kubuntu iso's and burned to CD. The drive reads the disks fine, but on startup, it won't boot from the CD, it boots from the HD as normal.
I figured I needed to go to the bios setup, and tell it to look at the CD drive first for bootup. But I can't seem to even get into the bios setup!
Thanks,
Hubert

On normal bootup, hit f2 (or f12, I don't remember, but the screen should show you) to get intothe BIOS. Then change the boot order. You're on the right track, as the boot order will pick the first bootable drive, and if that's the HDD, that's where it boots from.

Yeah, Rusty, I was going to go back to my post and add, I don't seem to get the normal bootup message. I was wondering if there was a new "trick" in XP I wasn't aware of...
thanks,
Hubert

If I recall right, you can't just burn a CD and boot from it. You have to burn it correctly to BECOME a bootable CD.

Another thing to check is to boot into your Bios and see if the CD is set as a Bootable drive.

Hubert, the early boot sequence doesn't depend on the OS - it's strictly BIOS-driven until one gets to the boot sequence, and the BIOS can be accessed with the f2-f12 key.

Jeff illuminates a very important point - a disc - any disc, HDD, floppy, CD, has to be made bootable to boot from it. On a CD-R, that has to be selected before burning, since you can't go in and change it once burned.

Unfortunately this does sound like why the computer won't boot from the CD.

I got it! It is F12, and you just have to be fast on the trigger. It does not display the normal "boot log" information, you just have to make sure you get F12 quick enough. And it does NOT let you into the bios, it brings up a menu choice of what media to boot from.
In any case, I'm writing this from Kubuntu, as we speak!

If the ISO is a bootable image, you just burn it and the CD will be bootable. In this case, the ISO is a bootable image.

On most Dell computers, F2 is to get to CMOS setup, and F12 is for the boot menu. And when they are FAST computers, don't blink or you miss it.. ;-)

Same as I said before though... Even if it is a bootable ISO image, you need to tell your burning program (at least I do in Nero) the correct settings.. Otherwise all you end up with is a "Copy" of the ISO image on the CD (Single file), and not the data or bootable info...

I use Nero and just use the burn a disk from an image option. No "special" settings needed. Works every time! ;-)

Well that was basically my point.. If you just copy the file to the CD as a regular burn, it will NOT be a bootable...

You need to select (in mine anyways) that you want to make a bootable CD from an image.

Oh, yeah. The Drag -n- Drop method will not work for an Image burn.. But anyways I think all has been settled now.. ;-)
