A couple of weeks ago I ran across a new pair of Nikon EII 8x30 porros on the bottom shelf of a camera store for $295. The views were certainly a WOW! I almost purchased them. However, in many ways, they seemed to duplicate my Swift Audubon Ed 8.5x44 porros. So I passed them up.
Should I go back and purchase them?

Bob ,
There will come a time soon when you will NOT be able to buy one !
I think that model deserves it's place in a special " Hall of Fame " for hand - held binoculars .
If you can afford it -- BUY IT ! :-)
Regards , Kenny

. . . I'm back. The store closed 15 minutes ago. Will reopen on Monday, 9 a.m.
Now, other than the fact several of you bino professionals are getting interested in this thread. . .
Can we discuss why the EII should be in the hall of fame?

Bob,
As long as the eye relief is OK for you, I'd grab them in a heartbeat.
Despite some bubbles in the coverings from hot weather, the 8x30E2s are my favorite daytime binoculars, followed closely by the 10x35s.
Don't let them get away!

Thanks everyone. . .
I will go to the store on Monday to see if they are still there.

Mark9473, your tagline says you own the Swift Audubon ED 8.5x44s. In your opinion, how do the Nikon EII 8x30s compare to the Audubons?

John, forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean by a "gray market"?

Rich V.:
Thank you for the information about "gray market." This is very good information to know during these days of Internet purchasing of optical products.

Why are these in such short supply? The optics stores in Tokyo are packed full of them and the Nikon reps I talked to said they are current and not discontinued.

$300+
No bargains on NEW premium brand binoculars here EXCEPT for the Nikon SE series that sell for $400-$500.

Rick,
You're saying that Nikon still produces the E2 series but not for the USA market?
They are no longer available here and most dealers have closed them out.
I'm heartened to hear that Nikon hasn't totally abandoned the E2. I suppose in the USA mid-priced binocular market roof prism designs are far more fashionable and the E2 just didn't sell in numbers great enough to be worth their while. Too bad Nikon USA didn't market them better, they're a really great little glass.
