In another topic it was announced that the new 13mm Ethos is priced at $620.
The original Nagler 13mm was introduced in 1980 at a price of $250.
I just ran an online Cost of Living calculator that says $250 in 1980 is equivalent to $624 in 2007...deja vu all over again...

I wonder how many things you could have bought for $250 in 1980; used most nights for the next 27 years and still sell it for more than you paid for it (not taking account of inflation)?

I get your drift, but I sure won't be getting an Ethos. For $620??? I have little buttons on my hand controller that will let me see the extra FOV for nothing. Sorry, Televue. I popped that kind of money once for the 31mm Nagler. It was worth it, but I had nothing else like it. My 14mm UWA is going to keep its current place in my lineup. (However, I suspect plenty of folks will be getting them anyway). - Rick

Here's what I just heard on one of my groups:

Count me in that group.
I'll admit I had to think for a minute or three after I heard the price (I was more hoping for the $550 range), but I use my 13mm t6 and 12 t4, far more than I use my 26 t5, so even paying $620 for the 13 is, well, rationalizeable (to make up a word).
If I hadn't been using the prototype, I probably would have hesitated longer.
I suspect there will be folks who were thinking about getting one, and then decide to cancel their orders. Then, they'll decide in a year (or so after they have had a chance to use one) that they really want one anyway.
Most predictions were for $500. That's 80% of what the cost turned out to be....

Yup. That's where I hoped it would be. Wishful thinking, I guess. Still, I have lots more than that invested in eyepieces I never use - and 13mm is a sweet spot for the Dob (the venerable 14mm UWA is my most-used eyepiece). Watch S&S for some eyepiece dumping!

I wouldn’t mind splurging for one to replace my 13mm Nagler, BUT, what happens when TV introduces the 20mm Ethos, and then the 9mm Ethos, and then the next and the next and the next? Where will it end besides deep into my pocket and all for 18 degrees more field. It’s a slippery slope...

I'm going to predict that the Ethos will not become the legend (sales volume wise at least, and bottom line contribution wise to TeleVue) that the original 13mm Nagler had been. When the original 13mm Nagler came out it was the only ultra widefield game in town which was sharp across the field in fast optics. Now there are a fair number of choices which are sharp from center to edge in fast scopes, and 82 degrees of AFOV will certainly be wide enough to satisfy most everyone. Many of you Pentax XW fans have in fact made it quite clear that 70 degrees is all you can see at one time anyway, so for all of you that is the sanity limit. Also, the original 13mm Nagler had 19mm eye relief and was comfortable to use with eyeglasses. The new Ethos does not even have this going for it. Admittedly, if it had come in at below $500 I may have seen this differently.

The same government which gives us the nifty inflation calculator also admits that salaries are (for the past 5 years at least) failing to keep up with inflation, so despite the theoretical equivalence, for most of us the difference in price is not a wash.

I agree. The Nagler was revolutionary; the Ethos is evolutionary. The same thing except Mo Betta. I can't afford to go down that road! If someday a used one comes my way for a bit less, I'll just keep my options open. But till then, I'm out! - Rick
PS: Meade will have a 6-pound version with a 102 degree field out pretty soon anyway.

Considering I didn't like my 13mm NT6 as much as the other EPs I own, I can't imagine $500 for the 13mm Ethos, let alone $620. I'm sure some of my friends will get one and I can look through it and ooohhh and aaahhh and then go back to my EPs...with $620 still in my pocket. I imagine it will be years before I may even be tempted with that $500 used price (which is probably how long it will take before the used price hits that point).

It makes it easy for me. I sold the 14mm series 4000 Meade UWA because I didn't care enough about the extra field versus the size and weight, and I have never bought any eyepiece for more than $400 before. Despite that, I would have gotten an Ethos if it had been up to about ~$500.
