After observing NGC 891 at a recent star party; I'd like to make an observing list of bright, showcase galaxies with dust lanes. So, clean out the cobwebs and give me your picks.

M51 shows hints of dust lanes and the connecting arm between the galaxies. In dark skies you can also see a dark lane in M31.

The Sculptor Galaxy NGC 253. It is about 30 degrees above the horizon due south. It is a beautiful galaxy. I posted a halfway decent picture of it in the photo gallery.

What about M81 in Ursa Major? I've only seen it in my 4.5 reflector but looked impressive.

NGC 5128 (Centaurus A) is a classic example.

Did you mean M82 perhaps? M81 does have a dust lane but it's very subtle.

Hey Dave, what scope did you use to view NGC 5128 (Centaurus A)? I looked for it a couple of times with no luck

Forgive my mistake Dave. I really don't know what a dust lane is but M81 is the most impressive galaxy I've seen so far. I thought the spiral arms were dust lanes. Sorry.
