Mike,
Can you post coordinates or some way to find you place on Google maps? I looked through the old MSHSP6 thread but it was pretty darn long. I found a description, but would like a map.
Buckaroo Steve, is the Trout Lake star party looking for more attendees?

I contacted a lady before I went two years ago and she was glad to have anyone. Been there the last two years. It is at the flattop snowpark about seven miles out of Trout Lake.

Thanks Tom.
Steve, can you give a general direction or road # that the flattop snowpark is from Trout Lake. If you're at Mike's I can get info from you then anyway.

Brad, Walt sent me some directions he cobbled together, which he swears on pain of free beer are precisely accurate. They pick up where you arrive at G/dale, after crossing Snoqualmie, going south on I-82, and cutting over to US 97 either at Union Gap or through Toppenish, then crossing Satus Pass on Hwy. 97. Here they are, with some [editing] by me:
Coming from N/S bound US Hwy 97 and turning westbound on West Broadway St (SR 142) [The right turn is at the Dairy Queen & Gas Station]:
Travel exactly one mile on W. Broadway st.
Turn left on South COLUMBUS Avenue.
Travel south on South Columbus ave. exactly .41 miles
Turn right on West Railroad St. It will be the 8th right turn [when we were there last, people were confused because the "W. Railroad St." sign was missing].
In exactly .93 Mi you will come to a "Y", stay to the Left, this is where W. Railroad St turns into Horseshoe Bend Road.
In exactly .47 Mi you will come to a "Y", stay to the Right to stay on Horseshoe Bend Road.
In exactly 2.36 Mi you will come to a "Y", stay to the Right to stay on Horseshoe Bend Road.
In exactly .77 Mi you will come to a "Y", stay to the Right to stay on Horseshoe Bend Road.
In 1.12 Mi you will come to where the asphalt ends and gravel begins.
Follow this for another 1.5 Mi.
Turn left onto Pinto Drive. Look to your right up the hill, this is the property. [Turn at the first Right, onto Appaloosa Court.] Follow the path to the top of this hill and you have arrived!
Also Lat/Long coordinates: 45 47' 44.31" N 120 57' 18.23" W
[Thanks, Walt!]
Depending on when you arrive, there could well be a fair amount of activity at the place, making finding it pretty easy. It looks as if about 35 TAS people will be there, plus CNers.
I think when you arrive, tell anyone who might ask that you're my guest.
Alice Few, my TAS contact, wanted me to pass the word that there would be a potluck Saturday afternoon. TAS supplies dogs & burgers, you bring a side dish.

I am planning to get there Thursday night myself, but late. I am going to try to get there before dark, we will see how it works out. I may find myself trying to set up the tent in the dark!

If I be the Spaceedee you're interrogating, the answer is that I expect to get there Wednesday, probably late afternoon.

Hey All! I have taken the bit and sent a e-mail to Denisse Fisher, the person who sent the e-mail to me about the event at Mt St Helens. Below is what I sent, I hope she has some good answers, and I will share them with you if I get them.
____________________________________________________________
I have some concerns on your event. You say there will be camp fires. This is a serious problem when telescopes are involved. First and most important, the light from the campfires will hinder everyone's ability to get dark adapted. This will greatly reduce the number of objects visible with the telescopes. The entire reason for holding a star party at a dark sky location is to get away from any lights, either local or overall light pollution. The second problem with campfires is the smoke from the fires will block portions of the sky from being visible. We have enough problems with clouds, we do not need clouds of smoke as well. The last problem, and may be the worst issue with campfires, is the smoke, soot, and cinders generated by the campfires may land on the sensitive optics of someone's telescope. This can and will destroy the the telescopes ability to put a clear image of celestial objects in the eyepiece, and may not be repairable. With some telescopes costing several THOUSAND dollars, and my own telescope is about $600, many amateur astronomers like my self will not risk this exposure!
Another item of concern is where you have stated that viewing will be over between 10:30 pm and 11:00 pm. It does not get fully dark this time of the year until this time. Most star parties are a all night affair, with some people staying up until twilight the next morning. The best viewing is between midnight and 3:00 am! I understand the 10:00 am time for breaking up camp, and do not see this as a problem.
One of the things not stated in your letter is acceptable lights after dark. Since I expect there will be people there who have never looked through a telescope before, and do not know what to expect, they need to be informed of some things beforehand. White light (like the typical flashlight or camp lantern) is generally not allowed at star parties, for the same reason as the light put off by camp fires. The type of lights that are accepted are flashlights with RED lenses. Ordinary flashlights can be temporarily converted with a bit of red tape, like taillight repair tape, or a couple layers of red cloth. These flashlights must be not too bright, and people will be surprised on how much can be seen around them when they are dark adapted. Starlight can be quite bright when it is the only light visible.
Please let me know your thoughts. I still want to contribute my time and astronomy knowledge to your event, but the campfires must be completely extinguished before I uncover my telescope and show the wonders of the heavens to anyone who cares to look.
Walt Ellis

Straight and to the point. I hope she appreciates you "educating" her about star parties and if they want to do this more often, she needs to be fully aware of the etiquette involved here.
I'm seriously reconsidering the whole thing myself. I know I was a supporter of this event but I have my concerns.

Hello Walt,
Very well said.
I just wrote to them as well, with the same concerns. I hope they listen.
Sarwat ------------------------------------------------------ Thank you for the program. It however, sounds a little puzzling to me that the event will involve a campfire. Fire (or even a regular flashlight) does not belong in a stargazing event. It spoils night vision, may leave low hanging smoke, produce soot and ash which is harmful to optics and last but not the least, spoils the atmosphere of seeing twilight fade away and stars pop out.
May I suggest we still have campfire (story telling and snacks) minus the fire? I would also like to know if interested individuals can continue stargazing well into the night.
Please do let me know your thoughts about this.

Good letters, guys, I hope they are seriously considered.
Hope to see you Saturday. I'm guessing I'll get up there in the 2:00 - 4:00 time frame. Would you like to try to camp together? Attached is Spaced finder kit.
