whether by design or accident, the fact that these 10x50 binoculars are actually masked down to 40mm may actually have made them a better performing binocular ie. hiding edge defects in the objective lenses which would degrade their performance.

This is correct; some inexpensive achromatic scopes did/still do this. It reduces aberrations, but at the expense of dimmer deep-sky performance.

Not at all - My favorite, and so far my optically best daytime binocular, is a cheapie that costs no more than $50 (I actually got it new off eBay for about half that), and I was worried that I was pushing it too hard, so I stopped mentioning what it is.

i must admit to being a little bit peeved over the bressers 4mm ep but hey i've been doing fine with them so far, i'de just assumed as 10x50's they'de be 5mm.
but on the other hand as i enjoy using bins of that size, surely a pair with 5mm ep's (all else being equal)are going to be brighter, meaning if i want to upgrade to a brighter set they needent necessarily be bigger than 10x50?
mind you im going to have a look and see if any thing can be done about it, but i've got a feeling its not just the baffle and probably has somthing to do with prism size and there appitures as well

i cant believe these things! just found them on ebay for... and i'm not jokeing "£49.99 buy it now" i only looked at them as i saw identical ones earlier today at a car boot sale, the guy wanted a pound for them, they 're made entirely out of plastic, had ruby coated lenses held in place with clear silicon and looked to me like kids toys!
well theres one end of the spectrum for under a ton.
should have bought em really

must be a contender for worlds worst bins

< they 're made entirely out of plastic, had ruby coated lenses held in place with clear silicon and looked to me like kids toys!>

The few times I went to the Canary Islands , i.e Tenerife , Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura , I saw shops in almost every resort selling binoculars just like that -- and on average , the asking price was six times the price of the Bresser 10 ( 9.7 ) x 50 ( 40 )!
