Hi,
Sol Robbins mentioned starting a thread dedicated to comparing Mars observations, sketches, and even the occaisional image a la mode the recent Venus thread.
I'd like to start it off with this link to my third Mars observation of the 2007-08 apparition: Mars Sketch 7 Oct. 2007
I used HB and 6B graphite pencils, orange and yellow ochre, peach, and blue color pencils, and my trusty finger for blending.
I'd like to put the color half of the sketch with a black background, but haven't been able to figure out how to do that yet. It's probably in one of the tutorials if someone wants to point me in the right direction...

Another great sketch of Mars, Michael. You gave the blue NPH and limb haze a realistically delicate color. That dusky patch is interesting; do you think it's a transient feature? (I'm not able to call up a Mars albedo map at the moment.)

I zoom in on mars in HNSKY stellarium, copy and paste to microsoft picture (or photo?) editor. I then play with the colors to make a black background and white disk, which already has the right phase of disk and print!
or you could also use the templates Sol Robbins posts here from time to time

Here is my contribution.
Seeing was good which is rarity from my observation site. I used 12" F5 Dob at only 250x. I don't have barlow lens so this is my maximum. I also used filters W80A, W25 but most of the sketch was made while observing in white light.
Sketch was made on 07th Oct. 2007. at 23:25 UT

Micheal and Acheron great sketches to start off this Mars season, it should be interesting to note the changes in the NPH and in the aldedo features as well as any dust storms that spring up while we are all sketching and observing.

Thanks, folks. Roland, the time recorded on my sketch is when I placed the major details noted. I observed Mars for an hour and a half beforehand and another half hour afterwards. To complete the sketch probably took a half hour. Then I had to scan it, confirm features (I didn't preview), add the technical info, and write the notes. I did this off and on in between outdoor chores. After starting my observation at 5:30 AM, I finally posted the sketch in the SSO forum at 5:40 PM. This is relatively quick work for me. 
Frank, I'm looking forward to your own carefully done Mars sketch. The versatility and competence you display in the wide range of objects that you render is truly impressive.
Mark, I agree and will just add a "c" to call it a compendial capture & comparison cubbyhole.

Thanks, Jeremy. Assuming you are referring to the diagram sketch on the right, I think it is just the darker part of M Erythraeum following the CM. I noted it because often the disk is featureless in blue light except for the bright limb arc and scattered bright patches. Visible surface features might indicate a lack of clouds or atmospheric water vapor. With the red filter, the dark albedo wasn't as dark as expected, perhaps indicating the presence of airborne dust. I try to provide accurate observational data in hopes that the wise heads can interpret it and then inform and educate the rest of us.
Btw, thanks for your comments about my Sept. 30th sketch. I believe the drawings of the view with a blue filter that you mention were actually the ones done by Carlos in the last apparition. I just make a simple line drawing noting details so I don't clutter up my color drawing.

Michael this sketch and report is just superb! I really like the CCCC for MM idea. I've always appreciated the excellent detail in your narrative, sketch and notes, they are delightful to read. I'm not very Mars savvy in terms of named features, but listening to the likes of you, Sol, Carlos, Jeremy, and others has been bringing my Red Planet vocabulary along. Now if I could only learn to pronounce latin! Wonderful post and beautiful sketch!

That's an excellent sketch with great use of color. I believe you have captured Cimmerium Mare on the CM. The bright orangeish area south of it would be Eridania (partly obscured by the limb haze) and the bright area south and following it is Ausonia. [Edit: I believe the big bright area on the following limb is the edge of the Hellas Basin] The dusky area peeking out of the North Polar Hood is probably part of Utopia. Great job!
Rich, thanks for your very kind words--but don't tell me an accomplished lunar observer like yourself has trouble with Latin.

Thanks for the info, Kris. Do you sketch on copy paper? I do my sketches on 60 lb. Strathmore paper (400 series) so was thinking about adding the background during processing after scanning. I have Starry Nights so I guess I could also use your method and try to print the template with black background onto the Strathmore paper.

Michael,
An excellent observation of Mars showing the Mare Erythraeum region. The North Polar Hood (NPH) is prominent. I look forward to your future observations.

you're welcome michael, I use standard A4 printerpaper (copy paper i guess  ) for all my sketches.
