While using Duracell rechargeable batteries in my SkyScout, the accuracy was pretty variable. Since switching back to non rechargeables (Duracell again), the accuracy has been really good and consistent.
What has your experience been with different batteries? Which rechargeables work well for you?

Gary,
Check the voltage needed by Skyscout. Rechargables are lower in output than standard batteries and can cause problems with too low voltage. All are the same I believe, but technology moves on and maybe someone knows better than me.

I've been having good luck with both Eveready and Panasonic high capacity lithium ion rechargable AAs. The Panasonics, for example, have a capacity of 2300 milliamphours. I don't recall the Evereadys' capacity, but it's that high or higher (maybe 2500 maH). Both seem to supply sufficient voltage. High capacity rechargables are available at places like the photography department at Walmart.
Best wishes,

Try Sony rechargeables. First it works, next it charges in only 15 minutes.

I'll second the Eveready high capacity lithium ion's. I think the ones I got (at WalMart in the photo dept) are the 2500 maH that came with batteries and a charger. I've had no problems with them, and they slip easily into the SC battery sleeves.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but there seems to be some misinformation here. I carefully checked the WalMart offerings, and the Lithiums are NOT rechargeable. They say they last 7x the alkalines, but they are one-time use. If the battery came with a charger, it is probably a NiMH battery. Can someone please confirm that NiMH rechargeables, in fact, work fine in the SkyScout?

The dealer which has MySky on backorder advised me that NiMh was the way to go. According to him (paraphrasing) they have a VERY steady output at voltage and does not drop off the way alkaline do. They maintain voltage right up till complete discharge.

You are absolutely right!! I bought the NiMH 2500 mAh rechargeables at Wal-Mart. (I just looked at the battery so I wouldn't give any misinformation again). They work great and fit in the battery sleeves perfectly.

For the sake of clarity the NiMH refer to the Nickle Metal Hydride batteries. They come in several iterations measured in mAh (micro amp hours?)
Is a low number ie: 1700 better? or a high number 2500 ?

yes have a look at the actual batteries often voltage and capacity is slightly different between nicads, alk, nimh etc..
some are 1400mhr some are 2250 etc.. voltage can be 1.2~1.5v as well.

From what I understand the high capacity NiMH batteries are for so-called "high drain" applications like digital still cameras and the likes. Since a GPS device is quite energy hungry I'd go for the highest capacity you could get. Please note however that rechargeable batteries exist in different qualities and with different price points. But in the end they're more wallet-friendly than disposable single-use cells.

Thanks for the clarfication! I am happy that regular NiMH batteries work on this device. Mine is on order from FrontGate and should be here on Thursday! I can't wait!

Mine showed up last Tuesday, as I was out of town till Friday night, I didn't get to play with it till then. I poped a couple of Alkiline AA in an it worked great, as I was charged up my NiMH 2500mhr AA. I used those tonight again with the same great results, the battery meter on the SkyScout showed some drain with the freshly charged NiMHs, they still showed the same after more then an hour of IDing targets and listening to the audio.

successfully used Uniross Hybrio Ni-MH 2100 mAh 1.2V and different types of UltraLast 2000 mAh 1.5V and 1.2V shield fits, but very tight. these are some off-brand rechargeables, but they work quite well. even though i dont think it ever shows 100% battery charge on SS, it will last long time (never got around to benchmark it, since i will use it on and off for a few nights then recharge them again)
