Y'all may have noticed Tom Trusock's announcement in, um, Announcements, as well as Joad's related post and resulting clean-up in the Off-Topic Observatory, that we have found that some of the more popular game threads in the OTO are really bogging down the server and slowing CN down with it.
We've also found that the really long never-ending eterna-chat threads here in the Outreach/Clubs/Star Parties forum, like the Mt. St. Helens/PNW and Ohio threads, have the same effect.
So we have decided to LOCK (*not* delete) the really long eterna-threads and restart them. As with the OTO game threads, there is nothing wrong with the chat threads themselves, only with the number of posts to them and the load on the servers. So to borrow a phrase from Joad's OTO post (heck, I stole most of his post to do this one  ), chat on.
We'll probably do a lock-and-restart every 2000 posts or so, just so you'll know...

I was just going to ask how many posts...thats a good number.
What about the "Top 10 threads" list?
Won't that never change because of the locked threads? What about threads like the "Post a picture" threads?
Will they be locked and restarted too?
I would hope they wouldn't be locked...but they do have alot of pictures which would be more info to load...How will those be handled?
Could the telescope picts be moved to the photo galleries with a subject of refractors, reflectors, cats, newts ect?
Should I have posted this reply somewhere else?
Maybe in the feed back area?

Any thread that gets too big will get locked and restarted.
I presume you're right about the Top 10 list, but I don't really know how that works, if that's an ongoing thing or a "just this week" thing for instance, or what.
If someone wants to move their pics, that's fine, but that's not something we're going to do. Some of them do appear in multiple locations already.
By the way, 2000 is just a guess. The games threads in OTO will probably restart at a lower number, but we'll see how it goes in this forum for a possibly higher number.

From the way it looks to me, it wouldn't change. It would kind of make that part a little useless...maybe a little unfair (thought that might not be the best way to describe what I'm saying ).
A "this week thing" probably would be better.
