Hi everyone,
Has someone ever done a comparison between a Zeiss 15x60 B/GAT (not available anymore) and a Zeiss 10x56 FL ? Which one would be the most suitable for astronomy ?
Regards,
Jeroen

Higher magnification shows more and fainter detail, but a larger exit pupil shows nicer views (in my opinion).
Since you can't get the 15x60 anymore (new), why the comparison?

Someone offered me a 15x60 for sale. Therefore the comparison question.

My 15x60 is my favorite astro binocular. It is very well corrected and is small enough to hand hold. I find a nice 10x50-56 complements, but doesn't replace, the 15x60. Jump on it!

What kind of eye relief does the 15x60 have, Gus?

The eye relief of the 15x60 B/GAT is 15mm.
I have not had a chance to compare mine directly to the 10x56 FLs but I have compared them to several 10x binoculars and for most (mounted) uses I prefer the 15x view over the 10x one. The 15x60 B/GATs are also one of my favorite pairs of binoculars.
Another nice option to consider would be to get the 15x60s now and then later pick up a pair of 10x70 Nikon Astrolux binoculars. Both binoculars have superb optics but the 10x70s give you brighter views of the Milky Way Star Clouds (if you can get to a really dark sky site to use them at).
Another advantage of that combo is that Nikon's #7806 tripod adapter work with the Nikon 7x50 Prostars, 10x70 Astroluxes, and the Zeiss 15x60 B/GATs.
If you're looking for a 10x binocular that you'll use primarily as a hand hold-able then I recommend the 10x50 Leica Ultravids because they have nice ergonomics and are significantly lighter in weight than high end Swarvoski, Fujinon & Zeiss (50mm or larger) 10x binoculars.

Hi Jeroen, I've got both of them. I prefer the 10x56FL in the daylight due to the brightness of images; incredible wiew! I prefer the 15x60 B/GAT* to stargaze for the overall correction: better pin point stars and better correction at the field edge. The 10x56FL has a little bit of astigmatism. They both have 16mm eye relief. Bye, Fabio

Fabio I am impressed that someone on the forum actually had both of these binoculars! Jeroen I own the 15X60 B/GAT as well and would agree with Paul G that you should jump on the pair you have been offered. I predict you will be delighted with them.

The Docter Nobleim 15x60B G is currently being offered on ebay, item number 270178577058. They are asking $748. That seems almost $200 dollars undervalued. I have been wishing for one for a couple of years. I do not know the seller. I have never bought anything from him. I have watched Camera$ for a while. Usually his binoculars, which ones are nice, are expensive. I wish I was in a place in my life to buy it! It is true that the quality has been held as the Zeiss factory changed into the Docter factory? I think so.

Hi Steve, if you want specs, why not get the original?

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all your help and info. "I jumped on it". It is not the B/GAT version but the GAT version. Despite the shorter eyerelief, which works fine for me, I am very pleased with this 21 year old binocular. Excellent images, sharp to the very edge, pinpoint stars, and the contrast (the sky is dark, dark,...) amazes me.
Are there other tripod adapters which can be used, besides the Nikon #7806 tripod adapter (thanks John)? The Nikon adapter seems to be hard to get here.
Best Regards,
Jeroen
