Cool article. The scope looks awesome. My dad really wants to build one of these, or at least have me do it. I was surprised to see that it only weighed 8 pounds. Most 4" refractors weigh more than 8 ponds. How thick is the wood?

Thank you for the kind words. The scope is made from 1/4 inch plywood. I think if you make the scope from cardboard tubes it may be even lighter.

This is so cool. I have always wanted to make one of these but I haven't any skill at grinding the optics which is what scares me off.

That was a fun article to read and I'm glad that you finally got to build that neat scope. What is the focal ratio?
BTW, I was likely in the same library at the same time, procrastinating by reading all of the Jerzy Kosinski novels on the shelves.

In the predawn light he made his way out upon a promontory and there received first of any creature in that country the warmth of the sun's ascending

Cool article. I really liked your discussion of your "moment of truth." Would the effort pay off ... or not? Looks like everything worked out better than fine! Oh, and thanks for adding the references!

I have a very similar scope with German made optics that I bought about 40 years ago.
Even though the aperture is only 108 mm, it actually shows solar granulation on the photosphere or the Sun much better than any other scope I have used, including the 75 foot Solar Tower Telescope at Mt. Wilson.

Wonderful article! Very glad to hear that your dream and ambition found a successful meeting!
The Schiefspiegler is certainly an unusual design... perhaps one day...
