Weirdest looking comet I ever saw.
Those are the EXACT words I wrote down in my logbook!
Definitely visible naked-eye. Fan-shaped with a very bright pindot of a nucleus, it's surrounded by a diffuse cloud and there's a dimmer cloud around the brighter one. I can just imagine what this would look like w/o the moonwash.
Here's a 4 second afocal image captured with my 8"SCT and 13.8 SWA ep.

Thanks Keith and others, I could not get home until 2AM but found it right away with your help!
Looks great, almost worth waking the kids, but I'll show them tomorrow night, it should be clear here.... I hope!

In the words of my 7 yr old: "Looks like she's heading right at us..."
Very perceptive, actually, and why nobody sees a tail!! (Actually, I think she's heading away.... I hope...)

Just saw it in my barefeet and pajamas in my back yard with my 7X35's! To me it looks like the brightest star in perseus. It's 7:00 am, Im so glad I checked Spaceweather before breakfast! I had no idea this comet existed.

Since this thing isn't going to let me get any sleep tonight...I shot some photos of the area showing the comet in relation to the stars in Perseus. An unlabeled and a larger linked image can be found here.
Great images/sketches everyone!

I agree Jeremy, awesome sketches and photos! Keep them coming folks!
What is this comet going to do next I wonder and how long is the show going to last? I won't get my scope mount back for another week. I hope it's still around then.
Regards and clear dark skies,

This is too cool. When you stop and think what it is, and if you will get a chance to ever see anything like it again... it really takes hold.
I tried to relay the significance to my kids last night... they seemed to enjoy it... or maybe they just like when Daddy gets excited!

The view from S. Ontario, Canada: Picked it up soon after dusk, naked eye and with 7x50mm binocs. Slightly creamy/beige color. Estimated mag. was +2.5 (using delta Persei and beta as comparos). Thru the 7x50's it looked almost stellar, but not quite. Just a slight disk appearance. It didn't seem to twinkle much, either.
Using an ED100 refractor, the view was bizarre. Like looking at a moderately bright star, using a lens with a bad zonal error or excessive spherical aberration. The coma seemed featureless and quite round and evenly bright. I'd guestimate it's size as ~90 arc. sec. The core (pseudo-nucleus?) was much brighter and almost stellar. The coma appeared ever so slightly "offset" from the nucleus. Seeing was only fair at best, so my best views were at 94 and 134x. The presence of the full Moon in the sky didn't seem to make any difference, since the comet was so bright and there wasn't a tail to see.
That's gotta be the strangest comet I've ever seen. Anybody who was unaware of it would have thought it was a bright nova, as seen naked eye or in low power binocs. Exceptional!

Has anyone noticed any changes since around 1500UT? We're under terrible cloud cover again.

Here is a shot I really don"t know how to explain. DSI PRO/CPC9.25. I'm very new to the camera, and was shooting with different settings. I suspect it's greatly overexposed, with moon glow showing in the upper left, and lots of noise speckles. The original image was in fits format. Hubert
