comet seen naked eye, miyauchi 5x32s and miyauchi 26x100s
bright, yellow, no tail in East:
delta persius is about 4 degrees below alpha, the comet is about 3 degrees to the left (north) of delta forming a right angle

See Celestral Events above, and SpaceWeather.com for more information. SW states mag 2.5, which is consistant for me to see naked eye in mag 3 skies with the moon.
This is cool. I was on CNs, got an e-mail notification from SpaceWeather, waited for dusk (not really dark), went out and say the comet naked eye, the with the 13 degree field of the 5x32s, then more detail with the 26x100s.

No tail, moon interfence, urban NELM 4.5 skies, and a crowded Perseus starfield. How hard is this thing to pick out with 15x70 binos I wonder?
My only scope mount is off being serviced, so my scopes are out of action.

It JUMPS out with an 8x42 handheld.
Naked eye in a pretty bright sky here. Very yellow and very nonstellar. I would suggest anyone with no clouds and ANY kind of bino go take a look at this one.

I can't see it with 8x42 handheld or 15x70 mounted.
I see Alpha and Delta Persei but I do not see anything that jumps out at me. I am very familiar with this area, but I don't see anything that shouldn't be there. Am I missing something?

edj,
Thanks very much Ed!
I was out in the backyard, right after sunset, using my Orion MEGAView 30x80mm to look at the full moon. I went over to Perseus and Cassiopeia and I could not figure out why this star would not come into focus.
I told my wife that there was something wrong, as all the other stars were in perfect focus.
Now I know what the problem is, it is a COMET!
Thanks for posting it!

8x42 handheld - semi-stellar, yellow bright star that is somewhat fuzzy.
15x70 mounted - obviously not stellar. Round yellow fuzzy blob.
Another user in the Planetary/Solar System forum just gave an apt description - it looks like a yellow planet seen through hazy skies.

Even with the bright Moon and a lot of fluffy clouds, I was able to get some good views tonight of Comet Holmes with my Celestron SkyMaster 15x70's in between clouds. It is easy to find being close to the Alpha Persei group (which is a great sight itself in 15x70 binoculars). The comet is quite bright and yellowish in color. (Why does it appear yellowish?) I could see it through the SkyMasters even when some thin clouds passed in front. Wow- that's bright! It does not look like the nearby pinpoint stars but appears larger in apparent size.
I hope everyone can get an opportunity to see this comet. It is certainly unexpected and should put on an interesting show in the coming days.

In my 15x70 Skymaster, upon further reflection and after having another look, it reminds me of a very bright, very compressed, yellow globular cluster.

Spotted it easily with 10x35s; it's about 3° NW of Delta Per. and makes a 3/4/5 right triangle with Alpha and Delta Per. At higher mags it appears as a yellow nucleus with a fuzzy yellow halo around it. It really stands out and appears to be about mag 3 or a bit brighter. The nucleus with halo looks a bit larger than the disk of Jupiter.
I've seen many greenish comets but this one is surprisingly YELLOW! Like a lemon in space! Fascinating!

I set up my 12x and 20x Pentax, and my Barska 30x. The 30x was the very best view of them all.
Tomorrow I will have to try out the Celestron C5.

I have been told green color is due to cyanide in the comet. Yellow-maybe it is that lemon/limen/lime issue?
I wonder what happens next? Hope that the weather is clear for the weekend.

I was just about to wrap up for the night when I read a post in another forum about the outburst. I was excited because I was actually observing comet C/2006 M4 (Swan) almost a year ago to the day when it went through an outburst.
I took out my 10x42mm first, thinking they would be helpful and was amazed to see how bright this comet is. In spite of the full moon, you could see something was "wrong" with Perseus!
The comet showed as a definite non-stellar object at 10x, so I went back inside for my 30x77 Miyauchi's and TV60 scope.
It showed really well at 30x in the Miyauchis: a very bright, yellow-orange, tight core, surrounded by a large, relatively uniform, and quite bright circular corona. Later on through my TV Scope at 180x I sensed what looked like a much fainter halo outside of that (would have liked to have had the time to set up a bigger scope to confirm that latter item though).
Even with the full moon, this comet is providing a stunning appearance. Definitely a view not to be missed!
Best description I can think of is like a Planetary nebula with a bright central star, with an unexpectedly yellowish (almost orange) color.
The contrast between the very bright core and the corona and its unusual color is what makes this such a striking sight...

It doesn't have a tail because it is distant and moving away from the sun.
As for the color, it's probably the elemental composition. I guess.

Saw it this morning! This thing is worthy of a scope if you have one. The internal structure is very interesting. Ron
