Morris,

Regarding the issue of additional equipment, I thought I might mention what a simple thing a "monopod" is. She could use an ordinary crutch (if tall enough) for a monopod. All she would have to do is rest the binoculars on top of it; that's all there is to it. A regular mount and tripod would be better in most circumstances, but your desire is to meet your mother's expectations. I think a monopod (even just a crutch from a "flea market" or somewhere like that) would be a big help, because it would bear the weight of the binoculars as well as help steady the view. Also, you might be able to go with a somewhat heavier model with more eye relief.

She'd beat with it if I brought a crutch into the house no matter how well intentioned

Does open up more possibilities though.

Must leave the forum for tonight but will resume my reading of the FAQ's and then searching for prices online.

Thanks everyone.

Okay,

so I can get some 20x60 from Strathspey and a tripod from them for UKP100 + shipping.

They have very good Eye relief and won't be too heavy being as they will be on the tripod. The tripod doesn't need to be 'star gazing' rock solid and to be honest once it is set up she won't need to move it. She's only 5'4" tall so it won't be at its least stable extended height.

All I need to do now is speak with her about having a tripod and if she is up for it then this is a go.

I will let you know soon.

BTW: John at Strathspey was very prompt in his response to my email and provided lots of useful detail. He also said that he checks the binoculars before he ships to ensure collimation and no obvious problems. (They just need to survive the journey I suppose).

Good luck with the tripod persuasion , Morris !

I've dealt with John Burns at Strathspey , and like most in a business of his size , he is very prompt , honest and helpful .

Regards , Kenny

Strathspey 20x60 it is

I have to say again that John at Strathspey is brilliant. I emailed him my question at about 9pm UK time and he replied within 10 minutes. Order has been processed and will ship shortly.

Thanks to everyone here for the advice and recommendations especially Kenny and edz.

I will tell you what she thinks about them when they arrive. (Is there a 'fingers crossed' emoticon?).

Update:

well they arrived quickly and were very well packed.

Mum just got back from a visit so hasn't had a chance to look through them but has opened the box to check them.

Seems they come with a little document telling you how to use them, focus and hold etc. That's exactly what she needed.

I will let you know what she thinks when she tells me

Thanks everyone.

Seems like she loves them; much more clear than her previous ones though a tiny bit heavier. Contrast sounds like it is so much better from how she described images.

Thanks everyone.
