Opinions on these Pentax 7x35 bins. new
      #1942728 - 10/28/07 09:26 AM Attachment (30 downloads)

I bought these binoculars for £10UK pounds and they are in mint condition and are very solid, with only a couple of minor marks on the metal parts etc. The model Number is No562 with 6.5 degree FOV. The coatings are a deep blue colour. They are sharp right to the very edge also. Anyone know how old this model is and if I have a bargain or not, lol. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Mark, I also found these at a car boot sale. The guy was asking for £16 for them and I got him down to £10 . They are very light and comfortable to handhold and the views are excellent through them although there is a slight misting or fogging on the prisms but apart from that, they are fine.

Cheers,
Andy.

Hmmm ok i'll bite, what's a car boot sale? Here across the "pond", we use different meanings, this one is new, an i've been to England twice. Geez must have missed something.

you get a whole bunch of people who fill there car trunk/trailer/back seat with crud they dont want and meet at a set venue ie a field/carpark and sell it. it neads to be advertised to get the paying public to attend, and over here weather permiting you can go to these every week as there regular events. most weakends we'll have two or three going on around our little town as well as all over the country

you guys dont do this???

its one the of UK's favorite past times! and you can find all sorts of cool stuff cheap... includeing some good bins

andy its quite common to find "fogged" prisms on older bins, not qite sure why it happens but its a pain to get at them to clean em and unless it really bothers you i wouldnt try as its posible (infact inevitable)you'll muck up collimation when removeing objectives and prisms, some times tou can clean the rear ones by removing the ep's and back plates and leave the prisms in situ just cleaning the fogged backs with cotton buds and a little alcohol (not to much alcohol that it runs) but you nead to be really carfull not to scratch them.

Here we have garage sales ( a neighbour selling their useless old stuff to everyone that needs them while neighbours say "I have couple of things to sell and proceed to set up six tables beside the three you set up), and fleamarkets (where you go to a pre arranged spot to sell all your useless stuff to get money to buy the all the useless stuff that you need from the other sellers of useless stuff)

well if a pair of nikon jb7 7x50's in excelent condition are junk to somebody else .... i dont mind and will happily snap em up for peanuts... oh i allready did,
a car boot sale is just a big out door flee market that anyone who pays there pitch and turns up on time can sell. in amongst the crud though if your lucky good stuff can be found

The internal fogging isn't really a problem as they'll only be used for casual daytime viewing, and they're great for that. I suppose I could have them cleaned but I don't think it would be worth the extra cost. Anyway for the money I paid for them (£10)I think there good enough bins.

Andy.

your right, i'de leave it and just enjoy them as they are. i have a pair that are slightly fogged but they still offer a bright crisp veiw, the fogging only becomes aparent when viewing in the direction of (not at) the sun as a slight haze...no big problem and i still enjoy them.

Thanks for the info. Yup we have almost the same thing here, rightly called "yard sale", or Garage Sale, but car boot was a first. Always willing to learn.

thanks

I have 2xs sets of Pentaxs. One 7x35 exactly as photographed and a 10x50 pair. They both have excellent optics. The 7x35 are 70's vintage, mine also has mild clouding / mildew however there build quality and optical image is still impressive. The 10x50's are my favorits however - again circa 70's. They have a 5.5 FOV / 55 Afov so a little bit narrow but this gives then almost sharp to edge viewing. Stars are pinpoint and contrasty with a flat image even when panning. I rate them up with my 1980 multi coated Carl Zeiss Jenoptem 10x50W's - the CZ has the better FOV however.
I strongly recommend an earlier pair of Pentax's if you can get one in good condition.

Thanks for the info charen. Your right the optics are excellent and sharp right out to the very edge of the FOV and the build quality is also excellent.

Cheers
Andy.

Just a quick question about the Carl Zeiss Jenoptem 10x50w. what are these like under the night sky, are stars pinpoints and sharp accross the Field of view etc.

Cheers,
Andy.
