Just found a spot on the web that has instructions for adding Comet 17P Holmes to Stellarium if anybody cares to add it. You place the following into the file ssystem.ini in the Stellarium\data directory. You must have version 0.9.0.
[17P/Holmes]
name = 17P/Holmes
parent = Sun
radius = 1000
oblateness = 0.0
halo = true
color = 1.0,1.0,1.0
tex_halo = star16x16.png
tex_map = nomap.png
coord_func = comet_orbit
orbit_TimeAtPericenter = 2454225.0277
orbit_PericenterDistance = 2.053218
orbit_Eccentricity = 0.432564
orbit_ArgOfPericenter = 24.2712
orbit_AscendingNode = 326.8646
orbit_Inclination = 19.1126
orbit_SemiMajorAxis = 3.617468
lighting = false
albedo = 1
sidereal_period = 2578.665
If anyone knows of any updates or improvements to the above, I'd sure appreciate hearing of them.
Clear Skies.

Click on the Start Button and choose Search. Look at your choices...You want to Search for Files and Folders. You want to Search in Local Harddrives [C:]. Search for a File or Folder named ssystem.ini. Once the search is complete, the file should be listed in the Search Window. Double click on that file and it should open in Notepad. Copy the text from the thread above starting with [17P/Holmes] and ending with siderealperiod = 2578.665 (getting everything in between). To do this, highlight it by clicking and dragging the mouse from the start to end points. From the menu on your browser choose copy. Click back to Notepad and scroll to the bottom of the file. Place the cursor on the empty line below (I believe) Vesta's data. Choose the Edit menu from within NotePad, and select Paste. Close or Exit Notepad and save the changes. Restart Stellarium...you'll find 17P Holmes near Persius in the NE in the evening.

The Clear Sky Clock is OK, you just need a cloud filter!

You're correct, it's a default texture. I'm trying to make JR Crilly's photo of the comet work instead of the built-in "tex_map"...if I can get it to work, get his name on it as credit, (and of course get his permission), I'll put up the file and how to add it. With my work load, it'll probably be long after the comet has disappeared though.

Ok...
Thank you to Mr Crilly. I have got his permission and a basic file done.
Instructions:
In the ssystem.ini; Change the tex_map to 17P-Holmes.png rather than the nomap.png, add the following lines (it has to do with rotation and if someone can figure out how to make it not rotate we'd be better off) rot_periode = 2400, rot_obliquity = 20. Then copy the downloaded 17P-Holmes.png file into the Stellarium Textures directory (folder).
My best shot on limited time.

Yep, I tried it on version 0.7.1 anyway, no luck. Guess I'll have to upgrade when I have time...

Thank you for taking the time to explain how to do this.
For Mac users, I found that if I did the edit in "TextEdit" Stellarium would crash on launch, but it worked fine if I edited in Terminal using nano.

Thanks, Jeff, for showing us how to add 17P/Holmes to Stellarium. I do have a couple of questions. I was trying to get Mr. Crilly's beautiful photo into the program, but you lost me when you said to download the png file. How do you do that? Also, I had no problem putting the Holmes data into Stellarium on my XP computer, but when I tried to do the same on my Vista computer, it wouldn't let me save the changes to the file. A window kept popping up saying it was an invalid file path, so I never could get it into the Vista run computer. Any thoughts on what to do? Thanks in advance for any help!!

To get the photo, just right click on the photo in the thread above and choose Save Picture As. Browse to the Stellarium Textures folder and Save.
Vista. I have Vista but have not loaded it anywhere. Sounds like there is some type of file protection going on. Can you save the file with changes to a different location on the disk (known location obviously)? If so, try copying it (after doing so) to the correct location. You can also right click on the original ini file and choose Properties...then look to see if the file is checked Read Only...if so, uncheck it.

Thanks, Jeff. Got the pic downloaded, thanks to your easy instructions. I'm not at my Vista computer right now, but will see if I can get it working following your suggestions.

Just so everyone knows...over time the "picture" will rotate (3D)...yikes. Stellarium takes that square picture and changes it into a ball. I am trying different combinations with the last two "rot_" parameters to try to make it not rotate or just rotate across the "area" facing Earth. No luck so far.
