Developing 35mm slide films
      #1948847 - 10/30/07 04:55 PM

It seems that it is getting more difficult to find local labs to develope slide films.

I still have lots of labs here in South Africa, but I do hear stories supporting your experience in the more western world. If I was I was still in New Mexico, I would probably buy a slide developer kit if our local film developer stopped doing slides. That was a great shop - with very professional high res scanning too.

My scope arrives in about 2 weeks. When I get back to shooting again it will be my turn to see what the locals can and can not do.

You can develop them yourself, even though it is better to do it with a mechanized processor than in a developing tank. I've done so on many occassions while in college, and I'm sure there are vendors who can see you the kits you will need, along with the tank, reels, and other equipment. You can dry the film in the shower stall to keep the dust away from it.

I've developed black and white from 35 to sheet film for years. But, color slide needs to be so exact. It's a bummer because not only is there only one lab locally that wil do slide. They won't do my 828 and 127's at all! I have about 4 boxes each of those two in glass slide mounts left!

It is a shame digital has taken over like it has. There is something about film that digital has not been able to accomplish yet.

I hope we will see some southern objects posted pretty soon.

I agree! Film is so much better! Which is why I probably have over 50 film cameras! I remember doing the old carbon style prints in the early 80's. To me, that would be more fun than doing everything on a computer!

Clownfish, Glad to hear you're getting a new scope and hopefully take some good images on film. I haven't seen any posts describing your scope plans so tell us what you've got in mind.

It is a shame that film is slowly going away. I've done a little of both digital and film astrophotography and I agree there is something natural looking about film that doesn't show on digital photos. I like both but my favorite images by the amateurs are all on film.

In the past few years I've seen two developers go out of business. Fortunatley here in Dallas there are still good labs that process 35mm film for about $7 on a two-day turnaround. Your best bet for anything other than 35mm format is probably by mail.

Good Luck to the OP and please post your results here!

It's my same ol' SN8, but it has been in storage in Virginia since 2005. That is why I have not posted anything new since then. When I back in Washington DC in July I had a chance to visit our warehouse and pull the scope from storage and have it shipped to Africa. It should be here next week!

Cool. Should be interesting doing astrophotography in the southern hemisphere.

To me, the ultimate slide camera for astrophotography would be a pro class superslide or 127 film camera. The slides would fit on a standard projector and instead of having to go through a 24 or 36 exposure roll. Which could take a long time with 20 minute exposures. 12 would be the norm.

jrw:

We've lost our local, high quality lab here in Jackson Hole, too.

I send my film to A & I in Los Angeles. Excellent quality and good turnaround (although not as nice as the one day turnaround the local lab provided.)

The only problem is getting antsy waiting to get the film back and see if your pictures turned out...

However, CCD imaging isn't as fast as most people think! It takes a whole night (or two or three) of imaging in LRGB to get enough for one good shot...and then it takes an hour or two to do the QC and processing!!
