Tel-extender For Prime Focus new
      #1942440 - 10/28/07 03:26 AM

I want to take some photos of Comet Holmes Monday and would like to do it prime focus. I have a 8" SVP with a focal length of 1000mm. I will be shooting with a Olympus OM1. The question, can I use my Zuiko 2X Tele-extender while shooting prime focus and will the tele-extender effect the focus? If this would not be advisable would I be able to get any detail with 1000mm focal length? I do not have the adapters to barlow the camera although this does seem like the best way to do this.

Thanks

Yes you can do it.
Yes it will change the focal point.
No it will not improve the detail on this object.(see next)
For the moon or planets the increase in focal length will show more detail for this particular comet it will just make the image larger but no more detail will be seen.

Thanks for the info, TxStars. Increasing image size is what I want to do. Will using the tele-extender lengthen the focus or shorten it? I don't have hardly any inward focus travel when I am shooting prime focus so if it will shorten it I am back to square one.

Will I have to take multiple exposures to capture the nucleus and the dimmer coma and what exposure time would be recommended.

Thanks

Off hand I would say at f/5 prime focus the exposure time will be around 10 min to get the bright nucleus and 40 min for the rest.

With a tele-extender the exposure times will increase by a factor of four making exposure times 40 min and 160 min.

You will have to guide on the comet to prevent it from trailing.

Have you tried shifting the main mirror forward?

Thanks TxStars, yes I tried to move the mirror forward and I still can not reach focus. The guy that sold me the tele-extender said it would double my exposure time but I didn't think about asking him about prime focus.

I can go 30 minutes guiding but 160 is out of the question, that is unless I do a few hat tricks.

I tried to do some piggy back last night. I had a guy make me a extension for my counter weight shaft so I wouldn't have to add more counter weights. I loaded the 8" Sky View Pro down with a 80mm guide scope and Olympass OM-1 and it tracked good. I did have to move the counter weights when I changed objects.

I bought a Sure Sharp knife edge focuser for photography and the custom universal adapter that replaces the T-Ring does not fit the threads on my focuser. Does anyone know of a fix for this other than a low profile focuser?
