Comet Holmes with green coma
      #1950158 - 10/31/07 06:02 AM

Hi alls,

yesterday skies were clear, although the halfmoon was up and some fog in the air. Not very good conditions but Holmes must be photographed... :

And much bigger here:

17P/Holmes

Exposure was 7 minutes on Fuji SHG 200. Instrument: 12inch at 5.3.

Hope you enjoy this spectacular comet without a tail...

Excellent Ralf! I have been using a CCD lately to image Holmes, But I am shooting it on film as well. Your image shows what would seem to be its true color, much nicer than some of the CCD work I've seen on the net. I have been careful to not overexpose Holmes, keeping exposures between 5 and 10 minutes. It's just too darn bright!

Hi Jim,

yes, it´s very bright so it´s a little bit difficult to show well all details.

I´m not sure about the right color. My opinion was, if the green hue and star colors come out relatively natural, the rest too...

Thank you for your nice comment!

i was observing it last night, what causes it to be so diffuse, shouldn't it be pinpoint, asteroids are.

That is a good shot, I tried to take a couple the other night but I haven't got the film developed yet.

Great photo, but I don't think your colors are correct. Even if you look at the stars, they are all a bit red with a geen tint..

Hi Boris,

here on my monitor the stars are not so greenish, as you describe it. I think, the color "green" is correct, other photos of Holmes show a green hue too. But if it is the right tone, I´m really not sure.

Here is the same photo, but lesser processed:

Holmes

Perhaps it comes now better?

Thanks for your hint!
