What's the trouble actually? new
      #1771 - 05/14/03 01:00 AM

If I just put a 8" SCT on it, what would be the potential problem?

I ain't expecting a EM10/GM8, I just want something which can track for a few minutes at 300x and to find things at 50x.

The 8" SCT is a very reasonable load for that mount; I've had a C8 and a Meade 8" on mine (I think the Meade is a little heavier) and both did well. So long as you get a working mount it will do what you describe. I've found only one "hard" failure requiring a motor swap - the other ones I've had worked OK with minor tunkering from time to time.

Thanks for your information.

This time, I will be a little bit more patient to wait for the Celestron's new CG5 mount, to compare and to see which is more suitable for me.

I want to mount a C8 on the lxd55. What will I need to do so? I know celestron has a doveplate bar? that mounts on the C8. Will this allow me to mount the C8 on the lxd55 or do I need something else also. thanks

The dovetail bar from the G8 will fit the LXD55 mount just fine. The only issue is that it doesn't have provisions for adjusting the OTA to agree with the mount's RA axis like Meades's dovetail plate for the SC-8 does. Shimming will do the same thing but not quite so easily. On the other hand, The Celestron plate is extruded aluminum and much more solid than Meade's.
