Thanks!
I was up late, gathering photons on M31, and decided to try an all-nighter. Would have been good, too, except the clouds rolled in as I was doing my second frame on Orion... sigh. Pretty bright nebula, though. Wow.

Great Pic mate.
I'm curious as to why some of these shots don't get pushed. I imagine its because they don't need to be pushed?
Also, when you stack the picutres, its obviously for reducing noise, but is it possible to get you to post an unstacked and undited image of orion here, so that a noob like me can see the difference?
I'm just curious as to what this image looked like prior ot stacking and colour changes (if any).
Thanks in advance.

I didn't push because, quite honestly, it's only my second roll of E200, and I don't think that I've really hit the limit of what I can do with standard processing yet. (read: I have no idea what I'm doing, send help ) Not to mention that I shot so many different objects with so many different exposure lengths that I'm not sure which ones push processing would help, which it would hurt, and which it would have no effect upon.
This is just a stack of 2 pics; each of them was probably nice enough to come together on its own, but I figured stacking them couldn't hurt.
I'll post an unedited frame, raw from the scanner, later in the week. I had an unfortunate laptop incident the same night I posted this image, and the raw images (along with the rest of my baby) are at the doctor's right now...
As I recall, this was one of the easier images to manipulate into submission; the original slide is just gorgeous. So I scanned it in, adjusted the levels, and that's about it, as I recall.
Thank you all for the positive comments!

Its interesting to see the comparison between film and digital imaging. I have to admit though i think your shot of M42 is one of the best that i have seen on this board.

Don,
I own a PrimeFilm 1800u film scanner. I use the default TWAIN software that came with the scanner (I should look into a better TWAIN importer...).
It's my first film scanner, so I'm not really able to give a studied review, but it works OK for the hack/slash level of image manipulation mojo I have at the moment. This is to say, I think that a more burly scanner would probably be wasted on me, and I'm not sure that I'm even pushing the limits of *this* one, yet. A great deal dropped in my lap, and there you go.
In other news, I picked up a scorching deal on a slide projector at a garage sale last weekend (poor sap wanted 5 bucks for it). The M42 slide looks even better when it's blown up to 3ft. x 3ft.

As promised, here's a crop (it's almost the whole image; see below) of the raw image, as it came out of the scanner. I resized the original 2472x1704 image to 900x620, cropped to 800x600 (so I could get the most original data out of it), then saved. You can see the slight vignetting at the upper corners (I had to crop out one set of corners to get a 4:3 image ratio, so I picked the lower ones), and that the scanner sometimes picks up the slide frame (that's the black border). As you can see, I didn't have to do much to this one to make it purty.

Here's a full-resolution crop of the nebula; this is a straight 800x600 crop of the center of the 2472x1704 image, saved as JPEG.
The black vertical stripe is some sort of munge on the slide, perhaps a scratch.
Both of these images are cropped from the 25min slide. The 15min slide has a bit darker background, but the amount of detail is quite similar, although this one's exposed for almost an f/stop longer.
Jimbo
PS: I like the double star at the bottom of this image. Hadn't noticed that before. Cute!

Wow! Nice image. I cant wait for Orion to pass my way.
BTW - I did a one click process on the above with a program installed on our work computers called ACD FotoCanvas Lite 2.0. It has this most amazing button called Autolevel that is incredibly accurate with astrophotos. The rest of the program stinks, but this one feature is so cool.
