[Resolved] Help with Polar align/GoTo on NexStar 5
      #1978491 - 11/11/07 11:15 PM

Hi All,

I have an original NexStar 5, hand control firmware ver. 3.13.13.10 (Latest available, I believe)

I purchased a Celestron Wedge/Tripod that said it was for the NexStar 4/5.

So I set my wedge up, get my tripod pointed, get the scope on the tripod, and it should be good to go.

I can point at Polaris, and set the hand control to tracking mode "EQ Polar North" and I can point at Polaris or Vega or similar and the scope will track it like a champ. It's been 45mins and it's less than 1deg off the crosshair. Close enough for a coarse first-time alignment, I think.

The issue is that I don't have any of the fun things described in the later manuals in my hand control. No index marks, no "now find the meridian" stuff.

Is it possible to align this scope as polar/eq for GoTo with the wedge?

The manual has next to nothing. (Get the optional wedge, have fun, effectively) The box for the wedge/tripod literally didn't have anything in it even resembling a piece of paper [sigh].

I'm kinda frustrated. I think this just may not be doable.

Any advice?

TIA!

Pay a visit to the nexstar resourse site that Mike Swanson
runs...

www.nexstarsite.com

You should be able to dig thru the info and get all the information you need...

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your reply (and link)!

I should have noted that I'd crawled all over nexstarsite as well as "The Unoffical Home for Celestron 5" SCTs" here: http://www.pietro.org/Astro_C5/c5_nexstar.htm

There are a lot of links off nexstarsite that I haven't followed. That's probably my next step. I also saw that Mattyfatz sold one here at CN a short while back identical to mine, wedge and all. I'm contemplating PMing him to see if he has any tips.

I haven't given-up yet, but hey - if it won't work then that's probably reason enough to jump up to that 9.25", right?

Thanks again!

Hi again, group -

Celestron updated the NexStar 4 manual with the procedure, but not the NexStar 5. Go figger.

The procedure by itself can be found here: http://www.buyastrostuff.com/faq/_disc2/0000001dz.htm

I plan to mirror it for safety, but haven't yet. Info is from Dec 2000, last updated 2002.

Thanks again, Bob!
